Well about 5 weeks ago I caught a cold but overcame that in a few days. My cough continued to haunt me till this day and it's not getting any better. I went to see a doctor who prescribed me Ventolin which is a powdered medication inhaler, Advair which is also a type of powered inhaler with steroids in it, and pills called Singulair. Well during the time i caught the cold my girlfriend and I called it quits which was quite painful and still is. I've had RSI/tendonitis/pinched nerves/carpel tunnel etc before which i cured by applying the TMS theory. Im trying again to apply those techniques to this cough as it is affecting all areas of my life. Can't do presentations properly at work without hacking away and people in my social life probabbly think I'm a walking viral infection. I have a feeling it is directly related to the break up with my girlfriend as that was the time i got sick and the cough just continued to terrorize my life. I think im a little rusty with the TMS philosophy so I'm going to have to refresh my memory slowly, possibly re-read DR.Sarno's books again. Anyone have some advice as to where i can start? Any feedback and support would be greatly appreciated.

I am a newly married tms'er. I actually had a long hiatus from tms after conquering "fibromyalgia." Thing is I always thought I'd never get married because I felt so suffocated in relationships. I started having breathing problems (which were attributed to allergies) when I moved in with my then-bf (now hubby). These have escalated as we got closer to the wedding. Now that we're married the wheezing and shortness of breath are off the hook. I've passed simply lung function tests. I did make an appt with a pulmonologist since this is getting severe and causing dizziness and chest tightness. I'm angry with my tms because this is really the first time in my life I want for nothing: great husband, great new home, stressful but cool job.

But, it makes so much sense to me how tms is manifesting itself after struggling for decades with relationships. Back to the tms journalling!

Congratulations MK on your engagement !! I noticed you said" getting engaged"... have you asked her yet?

I recently got engaged also. He asked me while we were in Aruba. It's an exciting time in our lives. I refuse to let TMS get in the way of GOOD change in my life.

I don't think you have a cold anymore and based on your medication list it sounds like your doctor feels that there is a reactive airway component to your cough. If you've never had asthma before, don't you think its strange to suddenly be developing these symptoms now after breaking up with your girlfriend? The most important thing Dr. Sarno has taught me is that there are no coincidences in medicine. Your bronchioles are composed of smooth muscle, which is under autonomic control. Having these muscles tighten up, giving you a cough-variant asthma or even regular asthma, is really no different than having your paraspinal muscles go into spasm during a bout with back pain, etc. Once you recognize this and start to think psychologically about what is going on in your life (everything happens for a reason -- come to terms with what has happened and be optimistic about the better and brighter future that is waiting out there for you) and your symptoms will improve really quickly. For the record, I'm getting engaged and I've been shooting down TMS symptoms left and right lately so don't think this stuff only follows you around during the tough times. Its a lifelong battle -- through the good and the bad. Fortunately, your knowledge of TMS is often all you need to get through it. Good luck!

Best,
MK
