Posted - 03/09/2009 : 18:55:20 So I got the results of my x-rays today and the neurologist said there is some evidence of spinal misalignment. Also there is more arthritis since my last x-rays five years ago. Seems like something Sarno would say is part of normal aging.
He wants me to see a spinal expert. I can see many more doctor's appointments and tests ahead.
Does this sound like doctor mumbo jumbo to any of you?

I have to wonder: what type of "spinal expert" is he going to refer you to? Did he say?
Also, the evidence of spinal misalignement....what is it? Can he show you specifically, and tell you without a doubt that some part of your anatomy is not where it should be?
I've seen so many different types of specialists. They contradict each other. The orthopedist and neurologist say that it's virtually impossible for vertibrae to get mis-aligned, unless you have been in a very traumatic accident. Even my last PT said this. They claim it's a disc problem. But they can't give me unequivical evidence that the disc is impinging anything...they only postulate and speculate and send me to PT or tell me to take a pill.
The DO and says that of course I had all sorts of things misaligned. The DO's treatment did not "stick" and after a number of months I felt the same. I have not ever tried a Chiropractor because the violent adjustments they do really scare me, and I know a few people who were hurt by chiropractors.
The acupuncturist told me that there were energy blockages. The energy was unblocked and still I hurt.
The Egoscue people told me that my posture was slightly off. I did their exercises for 6 months and my posture did not change much....and my pain was pretty much the same. That little adventure cost me almost $1500.
I got epidural cortisone shots that were supposed to make me better, and didn't.
All that time and money. All that aggrivation and worry. I felt like my life consisted of doctor visits, tests, treatments, pain, and fear, fear, fear. The only thing that seemed to actually help the most was reading Dr. Sarno's books and trying his program.
Just about everyone has some arthritis in their spine, especially if they are ages 30 and above. So that is very normal.
You could commit yourself to the TMS theory and "program" for a few months and see how you feel. But in order to do this, you must not doubt that TMS is your problem, and that there is no structural problem. Do whatever you need to do to erase the doubt. For many of us, it took several expensive aggrivating years to finally realize that, because nothing else was successful, it was time to take TMS more seriously.

"some evidence of spinal misalignment"
Sounds like he's a chiropractor or knows one to refer you to. The vertebrae are supported by tendons, ligaments and muscles. If there is any misalignment (which I doubt) it's probably minor and could be due to spasm in the spinal muscles (TMS). Sounds like he's just trying to give you an explanation for your symptoms.
"Also there is more arthritis since my last x-rays five years ago."
Of course there is. It's been five years. You're right "normal aging". I believe I have read that our skeletons begin to develop changes consistent with some degeneration beginning in our mid to late 20's. And just because there is arthritis, doesn't mean there will be pain.
"He wants me to see a spinal expert. I can see many more doctor's appointments and tests ahead."
You know it. Of course, you need to do what you think is right for you. All I can contribute on this subject is that I saw "specialists" for years and none of their treatments helped me. The only thing that did help was Dr. Sarno's theory of TMS.
My recovery story is on the forum, on the success story page.
Best, Peg
