Hi All,
I heard that part of the stimulus package would be aimed at providing funds for research in an attempt to find more effective treatments, which could potentially save billions of dollars.
Sounds like a perfect fit for the TMS research studies planned. Obviously, we know billions could be saved if the medical community accepted this information and taught it to their patients.
What do you think about sending e-mails to President Obama, suggesting using funds for the TMs research?

It doesn't matter if they don't - the point is that by writing, it will raise awareness. It may be dismissed as crankery. I'm sure most people think of it as that the first time they hear of it.
But when people start to hear of it from different sources, then they start wondering if there is something in it.
That's why I say when you tell someone about TMS and they seem to dismiss it, your time hasn't been wasted. You're just the first person they heard it from and next time they read or hear about it from another source, or the third time, or fourth time, they may start to pay attention.
I know people have said that was what happened to them and the second or third time they read about it they decided to check it out and then made a recovery.
I once read this (or something like it) on someone's forum signature:
"If you don't speak up you won't be heard. Speak too loud, or for too long, and people won't listen to you."

Capnspanky-you're so right. The studies are underway, but will take time
Panda that post you found is tragic and so unacceptable. It makes you wonder, how many other people have committed suicide for the same reason and it's just not publicized. Certainly we are familiar with some of the success stories which could have ended up that way were it not for Dr. Sarno's work.

I read the sadest post today, it made me realise all the more that we at least need to try and spread the word of TMS. Good on you Peg for trying to make a difference, you should be commended 
I have written to my doctor and am comitted to passing on information even if it is only a drop in the ocean.
Here's the post I read:
Our Daughter couldn't take the pain any longer. In March of 2000 she took her own life. She had suffered with every kind of pain starting with migraine to neck and spinal pain, IBS, stomach pain and ulcers, even dental and mouth problems
We had every test done. She had only one drug or addiction problem, Vicodin because it relieved her pain. Once I became a bit more centered after her death, I wondered if there would be a syndrome or disease not diagnosed soon enough to save her that would someday be discovered.
I am unnerved and stunned to hear of Dr. Sarno. My God, what if we had found him sooner? What if...Is this what she suffered from? Is this why she couldn't be well?
I miss her so much; I don't want any other mother or father to go through our loss.

I think about this all the time. I really wonder if we could solve the health care crisis. (Or at least put a serious dent in it)
Unfortunately, I think drziggles' approach of personally contacting the healthcare professionals in our lives may be the most practical for now. We have got to get the word out somehow. There is so much work to be done. We need some medical studies!! |

Just trying to give a little honest perspective for someone who treats patients as part of the "medical establishment". Any forum can become a bit of an echo chamber, and you can forget the realities of how TMS fits into the real world. In the medical establishment, most trends have gone against greater mind/body understanding over the years, despite some acceptance of complementary medicine. Just see the increasing number of spine surgeries, and increasing number of people with back pain.
It makes sense to spend time wisely--talk to friends, doctors, etc. Write letters/comments on sites/media about TMS when relevant. And no, I wasn't kidding about Oprah. Obviously, do whatever you want... |

Agreed. But there is a trend toward more acceptance of the interrelatedness of the mind and body. Wouldn't you agree?

Great suggestion. I think many of us do this already, but we could probably do more of it.

There is no chance in hell any government agency will put a dime into research for TMS--you guys have been on this board too long! This is a completely niche concept, not accepted in the least by medical establishment, and not really well known by the alternative types. Time would be better spent talking to your individual doctors and/or colleagues about it, as gradual word of mouth will be most likely. Actually, write letters to Oprah--if she puts it on her show it's as good as legit! |

We could alternatively send letters to the Whitehouse, although I like the thought of the immediacy of email. He seems to be up on the latest tehnologies.

That sounds like a great idea. I wonder if the potential grant recipients (for example, Schubiner or other people leading studies) would be able to help us figure out who to write to and what to say.
