Hi
I have a friend who is suffering from extreme abdominal pain. I first thought she had TMS.
She told me today that she has endometriosis. Now I don't know what to tell her. Is endometriosis actually a misdiagnosed form of TMS?
Any help or info would be much appreciated.
I should say also I looked up endometriosis on the net and it seems as though many women have it who have no symptoms while some have the same symptoms with no endometriosis. This reminded me of back pain and herniated discs.

Hi celloLWF. I was wondering if your friend has had any success with "The Mindbody Prescription".
I was diagnosed with endometriosis 9 years ago at age 24 (lots of scar tissue/adhesions on one of my ovaries). This was during a time when I hated my job and dreaded going to work every day. I would wake up with tons of tension in my upper back and my jaw locked into place. I never had pain in my pelvic/abdominal area until this period of my life. Thinking back, I held alot of tension in my abdominal muscles...they stayed tight constantly.
So I'm thinking maybe I had endometriosis for awhile before the pain set in, because I think most women have their first symptoms in their teens or earlier 20's. My theory is the TMS kicked in back then and "activated" my endometriosis that was previously dormant, along with the back and jaw tension. Maybe the tension I was holding in my pelvic area was pressing on the tissue and organs and aggravated it? It is strange though that there is no known cause of endometriosis as of yet, except that it may be hereditary (not in my case though). |

Wow, thanks for your responses.
There seems to be some strong responses from people who think endometriosis is not a TMS equivalent. I'll keep that in mind, but I'm going to give my friend "The Mindbody Prescription" just in case it may help her.
She believes that endometriosis is probably not the cause of her pain. The doctors she is seeing (Hopkins) cannot find anything terribly wrong with her. One doctor told her to see a therapist.
She is seeing one now out of her own accord after waiting a couple of months.
I still believe there is a strong possibility this is mindbody. Can't one technically have some mild endometriosis and have no pain? |

Hi. I had a complete hysterectomy about 5 years ago. I had stage III Endometriosis (there are IV stages). I had a lot of pain every month of my life. I am told it is also hereditary. I am thinking my Mom had it but I will never know as she passed away from ovairan cancer just months before my hysterectomy.
My daughters all have pain every month and are seeing Pediatric (they are under 18) Gyn to determine if they too have endo.

Dr. Christiane Northrup talks about endometriosis and emotional component in her books. So it CAN be a mind/body disorder (TMS or equivalent, whatever you want to call it).
I remember Dr. Northrup (on Oprah) asked a woman who had fibroids if she was in a dead end relationship or job. So she sees that women's health issues can have an emotional cause or contributor. Dr. N says she found women who have fibroids often have endometriosis. I'd suggest her books for more info on this. I found the info on the autoantibodies and the feelings women hold about themselves very interesting. She talks about healing oursleves too.
I have 2 other mind/body books and endometriosis is listed in both with possible emotional causes that are similar. Fascinating stuff about abdominal pain too.
Cello, keep in mind we cannot always make someone else see that their emotions can be causing or exacerbating an ailment.

Endo pain is not TMS. The pain is caused by an overgrowth of the uterine lining. Sometimes it needs to be surgically removed. |

I don't know anything about endometriosis and TMS, but given what mk said, I think it's important not to assume that something is TMS even when we would like it to be "only TMS." I guess that I'm worried that it would be easy to wish-think out of care for your friend
