Yes. Sarno even alludes to it at the end of one of the early chapters in HBP.

I have/HAD OCD really bad as a child....washing hands, skipping record running over and over about bad thoughts, guilt, scenarios... probably more painful than my back pain ever was. In fact, I think the back pain was failry merciful compared to the OCD.

OCD is not an illness ...it is just another symptom. I have NO MORE ocd because I got help from a competent psychologist who gave me some therapeutic 'drills', if you will....I ran the drills every time it occured and it eventually dissipated. If I occasionally catch myself there again, I just go back to the drills...not unlike the 12 daily reminders with TMS.

The thing to do with obsessive thoughts is to let them come and go and not be scared of them. Everyone has weird thoughts from time to time. It is only when we let them scare us that they become obsessive. And, they scare us when we are tired, stressed, and not up to our "normal" selves. Even if they do seem scary at the time, let them come, let them go, and see them only as a passing thought. Realize also that you are sensitized to them now and they are going to stick around for awhile, but if you don't worry about them they will leave. It is the FEAR that keeps them there, not the thoughts or a sick mind/body. For more reassurance, read Dr. Claire Weeks. In my opinion she is the orginal before Sarno. Not to take anything away from Sarno and all of his good work, but Dr. Weeks said these same things 30 years ago. Is not fear/anxiety the basis of back pain as Sarno suggests? Get a twinge, worry about it, get scared of it, and obsess over it? And where does that fear come from? Many, many things in our past that have led us to fear or covering up emotions. Same with thoughts. It is only the fear. A difficult theory to grasp in the beginning, but a life altering theory when you accept it.

I am still learning about TMS, so I cannot answer concretely. All I can say is that you are not alone.

Yes they are. TMS theory can be applied to a lot of things. Fear and obsessive thoughts are a great distraction and do work in the same way pain does. With TMS work these obsessive thoughts should slowly diminish.
