I have sciatica and have read all of Sarno's books and understand the concepts, but I have a couple of questions:

1. If my pain is due to mild oxygen deprivation then shouldn't this be able to be detected via a device similar to the one that they put on the end of your finger to check oxygen levels?

2. If my pain is due to mild oxygen deprivation then shouldn;t forced heavy breathing (like 30 deep, rapid breaths) overcome the oxygen deprivation induced by my brain, at least temporarily. BTW, I have tried this and is does help. I am interested to see if others have tried.

3. If this is all caused by my subconscious (or is unconscious?) mind then I would think hypnosis would help. I have tried this to no avail. Maybe I am just not hypnotically suggestible.

dear paul,

1: doesn't matter, unless it's going to help you realize your pain isn't due to an actual injury or malfunction in your body.

2: i don't know. maybe. isn't that hyperventilation?

3: the subconscious mind doesn't want to give up this strategy. some part of the way your personality functions / things occuring in your life is eating away at you. i'm all for getting over tms anyway possible, but lately i've come to terms with the idea that if its your personality or your life that is driving you up the wall, you need to address that instead of trying to "jam" your subconscious' attempts at distracting you.

Hi Paul, ill take a stab;

1) i havent the slightest since i dont know how that device works. But presumably you cant stick that inside your tissues--the ox deprivations is occurring internally, not universally.
2) Probably not, again the deprivation is targeted, it doesnt matter how much ox there is if its not getting to the site. Id say you're brain would trump any attempt of yours to increase blood O2, though im no expert on the subject. It might be relaxing you, which probably doesnt hurt any!
3) Maybe youre not suggestible :) All hypnosis is doing is making you open to suggestions in an altered state, you dont say exactly how the hypnosis is being used here to combat the TMS.

Note that the whole idea of O2 deprivation is a theory and hasnt been proven, although supposedly some study has been done that supports the idea.
