Pain becomes an obsession. I am slowly realizing that Sarno or not, you cannot obsess about the pain. I notice myself figiting in my chair at work testing to see if I can still feel the pain. I am thinking as I stand up, Will I feel the pain? I think that if you don't take the pain seriously, you have a better chance of beating it. I guess whether you consciously believe TMS or not, your unconscious is thinking pain=serious=worry. If you could just not take the pain seriously, then there is no use for it. It will not scare you if you can accept that it is not going to hurt you. I think I have been too wrapped up in worrying about "thinking psychologically" and instead should be not worrying whether I have pain or not. I mean I constantly press my back and bend and shift just to test the amount of pain I currently feel. It is so obsessive and stupid. I look back and say, where have I gotten from worrying about this pain? Nowhere except the fact that I have wasted a lot of the past 3 years. What is the point of worrying anyway? Easier said than done, yes! However, if you say to yourself, I will probably have pain on and off for a long time, then you have two choices. Worry about it or not worry about it. That is the question. Worrying has proved to do nothing for me for the last couple of years so what is the point?

Absolutely. Worrying about the pain is actually worse than the pain itself in my opinion and does more damage. It is important for our recovery from tms that we learn to deal with it effectively.

A few months ago I was taking a break in the staff common room at my school when I happened across Dale Carnegie's 'Stop worrying & start living'. I know about this book but had never actually thought of reading it. Anyway I browsed through it and as it appeared interesting, took it home to read. I highly recommend this book as a useful and additional tool in the fight against tms.

How to Stop Worrying and Start Living deals with fundamental emotions and ideas. There are many references of well known people with physical ailments who overcame their pain by using some of the methods in the books. In fact Carnegie knew back in the 70s or whenever it was that he first published this book that what doctors call arthritis and various other ailments are simply mindbody disorders.

Don't be fooled by the fact that this book was written way back then. Mr. Carnegie was way ahead of his time in his thinking.
A copy of his book now has a permanent place on my bookshelf at home.

It's the last day of school today before winter break. I'm off to Malaysia for 10 days. Have a great Christmas and I hope that 2005 will bring happiness, joy and personal breakthroughs for all of you.

Good Luck & Good Health
