Posted - 10/10/2008 : 18:13:31 hello, I am 33 and long time I was diagnosed with herniated disc L5 s1, I live in Ny and once every 2-3months I have severe pain on my butt. I saw dr.Sarno in person around the end of the month of august. He told me how he works and he was very reassuring. I did my exercises and 2 weeks after I was totally pain free! WOW! I was so happy I could walk without pain that after 2 weeks (end of september) I went running very light for 15 minutes. The really next day I felt that pain coming again and after 3 days I could barely move. I called dr.Sarno and he told me I seriously needed a shrink to help me going trough this path. I called the doctor he recommended and he explained he had to do at least 8 sessions, twice a week at 250$ every 40minutes. I smelled something I didnt like. I called back dr.Sarno and he told me money is nothing compared to health (true) but I was hoping for a different approach. AT today I am still in pain and nothing has changed. I really dont think I need a shrink and in top of that spending another 2000$ (after the 1300 I gave to dr.Sarno for seeing him once). Dont get me wrong I highly appreciate the guy, but all this seems too much like a business as well as the "regular' doctors.
Please tell me what do you think.

Posted - 10/11/2008 : 12:06:44 Jacfoti, I do think a therapist with whom you're comfortable is important. Also important that they understand and believe in the mind/body connection to see how emotions are manifesting themselves in you.
In the meantime, you can help yourself by journaling. Put a topic at the top of the page and write how you FEEL about it. Are you angry? Sad? Afraid? Why are you feeling that way? (usually can go deeper at this point). Are you being reasonable? If you're not, what would be reasonable? How can this become acceptable to you--how do you have to change your viewpoint? AND connecting with your inner child in this case means feel it without judgement--even if you feel childish--that's ok! Write as a child would. I had time where I was so mad I jumped up and down and stomped my feet and yelled. It felt good! LOL that's the inner child coming out. Important. If it's something that happened when you were a kid (remember 1/3 is childhood issues) write how you felt when it happened. Not as an adult now. How the kid felt.
I need to do some journaling myself today to get something off me before it festers and erupts as pain!
Maybe going to Dr. Sarno's lecture again or the monthly Forum would help you. It's always interesting to hear how other people went from disabled to getting their life back. Ask him if you can join the group therapy session; I believe your fee pays for some of that. It's worth a shot!
Best wishes. |

Posted - 10/11/2008 : 09:51:53 I highly recommend Dr. Schubiner's online program for you. It is highly structured and many patients that have gone through it have compared it to going through psychotherapy at their own pace. It also seems to work well for patients who have dealt with recurrences, as you are. Since you already have a diagnosis of TMS, you are the PERFECT candidate. I would definitely give it a try before pursuing expensive analytic therapy. I think it even has certain advantages over traditional psychotherapy as well. It only costs $250 and you can work on the course for as long as it takes you and Dr. Schubiner is fully available to help you out along the way via the course's message forum. Give it a try. You won't regret it. Good luck!

Posted - 10/11/2008 : 09:42:17 I would LOVE to go to an insight orientated psychologist but can't afford it right now. I feel your pain. If I can afford it next month I'm going to call Dr. Dubin in CA who does phone sessions. I think he charges $125 a session/hour (that was a while ago so it may have gone up). I he says you normally need 3 or 4 sessions. I haven't called yet so all info I'm posting is from posts on this board. Best of luck |

Posted - 10/11/2008 : 09:00:13 connecting to the inner child means that as dr.sarno said to meditate and try to connect with you as a child, every noght before to go to sleep. it's a kind well known technique to investigate your remote fears and shocks.

Posted - 10/11/2008 : 03:56:03 Personally after only 3 weeks, I can't imgaine him not telling and encouraging your to keep working the program, I would sure wait awhile and work the program, did he tell you to do exercises, by your post it sounds like he did.
I agree read success stories on here, and journal, or do some more reading.
I think there are very few people here that see a complete recovery after 3 weeks- so don't feel like your alone. I think its more a slow process, than a speedy recovery one. |

Posted - 10/10/2008 : 21:36:39 It's not unusual to see a shrink twice a week for anxiety, particulary if physical pain is one of the manifestations. However, it does sound unconventional to suggest a strict treatment plan during the first phone conversation.
I'm no stranger to the psychiatrist's office, and I know exactly what you mean. The charges often seem exorbitant and they all watch the clock. It can feel offensive. But, with the right doctor/person, the time and money you spend can be well worth it. Also, my understanding is that many insurance companies will reiumburse up to 100%, indefinitely, for certain biological diagnoses (TMS has an OCD component...you could discuss this with the practitioner, if and when you choose one).
I would suggest making a few more calls before you see the doctor that rubbed you the wrong way. In the meantime, journaling and inspirational reading are always acceptable options. Good luck! |

Posted - 10/10/2008 : 19:41:11 I do more lurking than posting - personally speaking, the advice I see written here by regulars is better than any shrink I've ever been to. I understand where you're coming from, in that therapy and treatment can be expensive, so you may want to start by reading the forum and reading posts by those who are in a similar situation as you. Buy the books, do some journaling...others here can definitely point you in the right direction.
