"When the pain is gone, or almost gone, start o do physical things you have been afraid to do. This is very difficult for some people with TMS, and it may take many weeks or months before you are able to get back to full physical activity." |

Posted - 09/29/2008 : 08:29:47 I get that same fear from saying certain words. I can't get certain words out and a fear builds when I know I have to say one. I think my social phobia really adds to this fear. Did you overcome the fear of doing these things and then the pasin left. Or did the pain leave and then you overcame the fear of doing these things. |

Posted - 09/29/2008 : 07:07:43 I think "FULL" is the key word here. Pushing throught the pain to some degree, but speaking from experience, it is scary. Exercises where you're sitting and roll down to lying position (or back up) scared me because I thought I was hurting my tailbone for YEARS. It took one year from my big TMS episode to finally say "screw it, I AM DOING THIS exercise" and I forced myself to overcome the fear and JUST DO IT. No pain! I was so excited! I have done the rolldowns with almost no fear, but since I carried the fear for years it sometimes is natural to hesitate but I catch myself now and do it anyway. Still no pain. So that is conquering the fear. There is nothing wrong with my tailbone and I can do all the leanbacks/rowing/rollup/down I want! YAY!!! So for me it took time to get to the point of overcoming the fear. |

Posted - 09/28/2008 : 11:51:54 John, I don't know that it applies to you, because as you have pointed out, you don't have PAIN, per se. For some people, the PAIN they experience is very debilitating (Dr Sarno gives an example where a man had to be transported by ambulance) and the fear of the pain, and the actual pain (their pain IS real, albeit not caused by anything dangerous) can be severely physically limiting. In your case, you are ABLE physically to do anything you want, right? Including drink alcohol or kiss, right ? without anything debilitating happening (other than FEELING EMOTIONALLY "devastated" if you experience symptoms .. ?? So in your case, you might want to focus more on the emotional work ? |

Posted - 09/28/2008 : 10:47:03 To me it means this: If you have had, say chronic back pain because you "injured" your back one day when you bent to pick something up, and you have been told by doctors etc. that it's bad for your back if you bend, and if you do then you might injure it again. You will be afraid of bending. Dr. Sarno means that when you get to the point where you have been doing the TMS work and your pain is gone, or nearly gone and you feel confident that the pain is caused by TMS and not by bending, then you should start gradually to bend again, or whatever physical thing it is that you have become afraid of. |
