Sadly, how I found it isn't a terribly interesting story... I forget why, but I was doing a forum search for "wiki." I ended up finding a lot of threads, though.
I've never watched much UFC, but I do confess to being fascinated by it. I'm pretty much in awe of the fighters, I suppose.
Perhaps we could invite Karo to join the forum... It might help him. |

Posted - 02/06/2009 : 20:39:16 So he beat Dong Hyun Kim on 1/31, but did others notice the following in Skizzik's last article? He was supposed to face Yoshiyuki Yoshuda at UFC 88, but had to withdraw after developing sciatica before the weigh in. He said, "I was laid up for days recuperating and was on crutches – I couldn’t even move I was in such pain. I was literally in tears over having to cancel that fight." He gets control of panic attacks and then suddenly he gets sciatica. Hmmm... symptom imperative?
Finally, at the end of the article, he says, "I take care of my family financially and they appreciate it but they still treat me the same. Old ladies in the street recognize me and it blows me away. I go home and tell my dad and he says ‘That’s great!’, then he tells me to put on a coat before I go back out and asks me where I’m going and when I’m coming home."
It definitely reminds me of the father issues that Skizzik mentioned. I feel bad for the guy. And maybe his opponents.
Sarno writes (p.34, HBP) "These feelings of inferiority are deep and hidden... so if we feel weak, we act strong ... a self-proclaimed "tough guy" came under my care... he was constantly bragging about his prowess in hand-to-hand combat... In my office he wept inconsolably about his inability to cope with his back pain. Emotionally, he was a very little boy trying desperately to prove to himself and the world how tough he was."
Then the article says that Paro is known for being cocky.... I don't want to play armchair therapist--I know that I can't diagnose from this far away, but the parallels between what I've been reading in HBP and what I read in Skizzik's article definitely made me think.

Posted - 09/11/2008 : 04:38:48 yeah, I always thought of him as looking relaxed and composed too, compared to the other fighters that are jumping around w/ ants in their pants prior to the bell. Theres usually 3 good fights out of the 8 that I can't wait to see on the card per month.
Karo is/was one of those fights. His moves are so fluid that his take downs and ground moves look like he choreographed them w/ his opponent prior to the fight. So talented.
His professional career has him at 26 wins and 5 losses.
In the UFC he's 9 wins and 3 losses. The losses all went to decisions except for the last one in april in which he was knocked out in 34 seconds when he had been suffering from panic for a few mos at that time....hmmm...maybe his ego took an extra blow there and revved up the tms more. |

I'm a huge mma fan. I've watched Karo fight for years and this is a shock. He has always been extremily relaxed even in the middle of a fight. |

If you read the bio section you'll see that his dad took him to judo as a kid to burn off all his anger that he was using beating up his sisters.
My first thought was maybe he was mad his dad was'nt spending time w/ him as a youth and thats why he was so angry. Perhaps he threw him into martial arts so he did'nt have to deal w/ young Karo. But thats only speculation. It seems every dude I've corresponded w/ has had father abandonment issues one way or another (w/ a couple exceptions) so thats why I'm biased to think that.
Either way, he had a lot of anger. |
