When I first heard about Dr. Sarno and TMS, people often respond how that may work for minor stuff, but they had a very serious injury, etc. Hmm, OK.

But then I remembered reading how Christopher Reeves had felt he was "lucky" because he had no pain whatsoever after his accident, even though he still had a good deal of sensation. He had a serious back injury. OK.

Then I remember reading about the actor Jason Priestly, from the TV show 90210, who ran a race-car into a wall at about 170 m.p.h. while warming up for a race. He had massive injuries mostly to his back and face. He recouperated and is doing fine. His back was broken and banged up in several places. Serious injury, no pain.

As we here are believers in TMS, we know that trauma/injury is not correlated to back pain. In fact, as we know, back pain doesn't even come from the back [except for maybe bone cancer in the spine, but that pain does last long because, sadly, the patient soon dies.] These cases certainly support TMS theory.

Actors have to be very confident and positive to succeed in the face of all that rejection. Most successful actors are generally positive, confident people. Their career requires that they be physically fit, and to physically and mentally pick themselves up and dust themselves off very quickly if a project fails or if they get rejected. They are generally not overly anyltical, I don't want to say they are one-dimensional, but they sort of "are who they are".
Actors are not the brooding, tortured artist type at all, even though the smarter ones can do complicated roles.

So, actors are straightforward people (not too deep, not too intellectual), positive, have a lot of social contacts, and keep very busy in a career they feel passionate about. I searched about a year ago and could not find any actors (or very few) with serious back problems. I thought this was noteworthy because their are hundreds of actors and every time they burp it makes the news.

Actors also often(in fact it's their job) get "out" of themselves. They get "into" the role. They also seem to have a lot of faith, not religious, but in their future. They believe they will eventually get the big role, the great part, the academy award, etc. and they keep on believing. Actors stay busy all year round, whereas athletes, however, have the off season to ponder their physical ailments, and they do seem to get TMS quite often.

Just some observations about a cluster of traits and habits of a group of people who don't seem to get TMS much.

In response to Holly's query about actresses and their heels:

Having worked in the film/TV business for a decade,I have had numerous occasion to see Actors and actresses close-up.

The Image they portray on film is only sometimes how they are in reality.

Holly..I worked on JAG that military show...you know that Actress who is the star ...you know the Marine Officer who is always dressed to the nines in spike heels....she walks around the stage BAREFOOT and only puts the shoes on right before each scene. She is a really nice person, and I had no idea she was the "star"until I actually watched the show once(piece of crap)

The Main male character is an A-Hole...he was "goofing" around and fired a stunt gun right behind the head of the prop guy who is now DEAF....Belasarius,the producer has suppressed the story as best he can.........

Here's: 'Baseball65's insiders gossip column into the personalities of big Hollywood celebrities and other notables'

Bruce Willis----Biggest A-hole in the business. If you work on one of his films you can be fired for making eye contact with him !!
Alec Baldwin----A close second..walked right thru a floor I had just painted, even though I asked him to walk around!
Tom Hanks----Nice guy...did some schtick for me,very personable,good tipper..very humble man.
James Coburn---Really nice guy and a HUGE tipper
Warren Beatty---Most arrogant man I've ever met
Annette Benning--Really nice,Volunteers for everything,low key..wonder why she married an A-hole??
Vanna White---best mother, volunteer type you could imagine, really sweet
Mike Myers---Really friendly, treats everyone with respect, and of course is really well liked.
Sarah Jessica Parker--so self obsessed I fear for her health..looks bony and masculine from too much working out
Jack Nicholson----could take Keith Richards to task....lives 3 feet off the ground(you've never seen him sober)
John Fogerty----Hardest working, lowest key,Family guy into his kids
Kirk Kerkorian---That's the richest guy in the western Hemisphere???
I thought he was the poolman.....really cool head.
Slash----image is hype...totally coherent ,shrewd business man type, always paid on time...fiscally conservative
Sheryl Crow---ditsy new-age horoscope reader, abuses celebrity to take advantage of unknown, poor struggling writers
Clint Black---Really really funny down to earth type.
Anthony Kiedis---Who forgot to put personality in this robot...it's all an act..should be a clerk somewhere
Bobcat Goldthwait--It's NOT an act...that's how he is 24/7
Jay and silent Bob---It's not an act....hide your drugs and alcohol.
Ella Fitzgerald(R.I.P.)---Beautiful Human Being--she's got to be an Angel somewhere
Lee Remick(R.I.P.)---same thing..beauty and grace
Bob Matusak---That was no ACT..and he really was that big.
Shaquille O'neal---Gentle Giant..loves his kids more than B-ball

That's enough for now......I got carried away...I must have lived in LA too long.

Go and check my list against THEIR mri's.

I missed my calling.

I should have written for the Enquirer

Joe, I think you may be on to something. I have heard of some actors, like Tobey McGuire, who've had back problems to the degree they've turned down roles in order to "rest." But for a group of people who're under constant scrutiny and pressure to succeed, they do not have the "back" problems one might expect - as compared to athletes let's say.

Maybe actors have a lower incidence than TMS than athlete-celibrities because of the nature of their work. Actors, through their work, frequently express anger and sadness. They also get to commit many social taboos while in character, thus giving their shadows a chance to come out and play without the terrible consequences that could result in "real life."

Maybe TMSers should be encouraged to play villains in their local theatre groups? But maybe this wouldn't work and maybe my theory is too facile. Wasn't Gary an actor?

I just heard recently that George Clooney had a herniated disk and was out of circulation for a while. His pain was attributed to an "injury" from a movie he worked on months before. Also, I believe I remember hearing about Charles Grodin having back issues.
I've heard that many become actors because of their low self esteem.
Just my two cents.

Hey Joe C.

I was actually turned on to Sarno by an Actor. His name is Michael Monks..( I know..who??) He was my neighbor for years, and everybody who came over would say " Hey....I know that guy...he's ..uhhh...where the Hell have I seen him."

He's a caricature actor...usually plays the boyfriend,the psycho murderer,the Cop....he's in everyhting,but he's never the star.

He does have a great attitude (I wouldn't let my sons watch him on that law and order show, cuz he murders his girlfriend and hides her head in a bag).....he has to constantly face rejection (auditions) but has the occasional success.....he has 4 herniated discs, but plays golf competitively,no-pads tackle football on the weekends and (we have really thin walls) is ...uhh....quite capable in OTHER activites.

I always have to be grateful to him for helping me,and also doing for me a lot of what this forum does...answer questions and be supportive.

He's in that Garfield movie that your kids are probably watching about now...he's the dog catcher!!

Good post! That also goes for those models & actresses all being able to wear those "very" high shoes without any problem. What do you think Baseball?
