I have not posted for a while. But I would like to share an experience earlier this year about the effect of surgery and why so many people have it. I had to have surgey in March for a large (luckily benign) ovarian mass. It weighed 5lbs and was the size of a small watermelon, clearly NOT TMS! But I had been having various TMS symptoms for quite awhile. I noticed that for about 2 weeks after the surgery all my TMS symptoms disappeared. Why? I was being taken care of, both in the hospital and at home. (One of Sarno's reasons for pain is that we all want to be taken care of) And I had been focused on whether or not the tumor was cancer, clearly a much bigger distraction. They could not tell that until the surgery was done. As my physical healing progressed, my TMS symptoms started to reappear. I was not taking any major narcotics as I cannot process them. Just regular Tylenol. And my TMS is more about mood stuff, ringing in my ears and sleep problems, not back pain. Because to me back pain is so obviously psychological that my psyche chooses other things. Anyway I think this might be why alot of people opt for surgery for their back pain and get some short term relief. These days I am getting good results from making the lists of what could be bothering me and recognizing that the symptoms are not from a physical cause but a distraction generated by my subconscious. It seems to be working.
