Posted - 05/22/2008 : 20:09:51 Has anyone here ever tried the "EFT" pain technique? It seems like the same premise as "MIND/BODY" stuff, but there is something kooky about it. A lot of NLP(neuro linguistic programming)and distraction(tapping). But does this stuff actually work, or does it work as a placebo effect, but still in the 'mind'.

Posted - 05/23/2008 : 16:47:41 quote: EFT is a very effective yet gentle method of directly balancing the body's energy system for the feelings that you want to change. It's a bit like clearing a log that's blocking a stream where the log represents a stuck emotion in your stream of energy. You don't have to believe in the theory though, just as you don't need to know how a car works under the bonnet to drive one. Some people do like to find out more about the theory, while others are happy simply to have their problem resolved.
If you are clear in yr mind that what you have is TMS then EFT should complement the TMS treatment and if TMS doctors are using it then it can't be all wrong. I think each person should decide for themselves whether it is for them or not.

Posted - 05/23/2008 : 11:57:09 I tried it for my foot back/pain with a well-known NYC practitioner. Did zip. Don't waste your time or money. |

Posted - 05/23/2008 : 10:08:18 there's a lot of detail about eft in Kevin Jarvis's tms book. It was not "the" cure for him, but the significant short term results helped convince him his pain wasn't structural and gave him confidence to keep figuring out why his body was making noise; Which he ultimately did. He posted his phn # on one of his posts, and rtn's calls. He's "kjarvis" |

Posted - 05/22/2008 : 23:53:34 Heh, I got a meta-post about my post before I even posted. That's a good one.
I should note that John Bradshaw, whose books and concepts of shame-based families I think are overall brilliant, advocates use of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) which uses certain hand or body positions combined with memories and visualization to supposedly deal with past trauma.
I have not tried this because I don't feel comfortable with the way it works. It feels too much like tricking myself to me, and one thing I don't want to do in my approach to TMS is trick myself. I want to be as honest with myself as I can because what I am trying to overcome is my own internal filter.
I also don't see why the body tricks are relevant to the mental states because they seem arbitrary to me (much like EFT tapping), but that doesn't mean I am correct about this.
As you said, different strokes.

Just wanted to add that Dr. Schubiner utilizes parts of EFT in his treatment program as a way of reprogramming the unconscious mind.

Posted - 05/22/2008 : 20:46:01 The results I had were on acute problems, rather than chronic ones. However, with everything I've read about it (ok, so mostly they're 'case studies' and 'testimonials' which normally put me off straight away - although I have read some first-hand accounts) it does make sense (not the actual reasoning behind it, but the way people work it). My own reasons for not using it on the main core of my problems are to with me, not EFT itself. What resonates with me is the idea of psychological reversals ie that there's parts of you that may not want to overcome the problem, for some secondary gain or subconcious desire for protection. It is completely free to use, you can download the manual for free and read a plethora of examples on the site, and other forums. You could try it and see if it helps?

Posted - 05/22/2008 : 20:34:39 I just read over the archives about "EFT". Hope this doesn't start a fight. I guess it works for some people, but like someone said in the comments, one would have to maybe be open to "suggestive" programming, seems sorta like hypnosis.
I'm not really one to fall for suggestions or ritualistic tapping. Seems kinda weird to me, but , different strokes I guess.

Posted - 05/22/2008 : 20:28:02 wow, quick responses. I thought the subject of EFT only came up once here. Didn't think there was some big 'debate' over it. Sorry if I inadvertently brought back bad feelings. Maybe I even commented on it before but forgot.
Anyways, I was just wondering if it's like "short term" TMS work/theory.
@golden_girl:
If you had borderline miraculous things happen to you with it, did you keep going? If it worked, are you spreading the word about it, recommend it, etc.? Or do you believe it is 'in line' with TMS principles?

Posted - 05/22/2008 : 20:21:45 I rest my case lol..
Just wanted to add that someone mentioned a few posts back that they're seeing Dr Mark Atkinson in the UK, who treats people for TMS. He uses EFT in his treatment plan and discusses it in his book. Make of that what you will!

Posted - 05/22/2008 : 20:16:01 This topic has been beaten to death on this board. Many people feel it is total bunk and/or only the talk therapy part is worthwhile, while others say it has helped them.
I recommend searching the archives for past opinions. Hopefully we won't have to rehash it again.

Posted - 05/22/2008 : 20:15:32 You'll probably get replies here saying 'Every once in a while someone brings up EFT but basically it's a load of rubbish' I've used it for a few things and had some results that bordered on miraculous. I read a lot about it and find it fascinating...
