I have noticed that when my pain symptoms subside, they are replaced with horrible depression, sadness and suicidal thoughts. Its pretty clear to me why my brain is trying to protect me with the pain.

I guess that I'm feeling emotions at all (which I don't when I'm in pain) is a good thing and I should take this as encouraging and keep journaling/feeling/expressing them?

Thanks for any help... Neil

Hi Neil,

As my major TMS symptoms ended, I went through a terrible depression too. It felt very surreal and a lot of ugly painful thoughts and feelings that I didn't know I was capable of feeling. I went to a psychotherapist who helped me reconnect with some of the events that led me to the pain, and then to the depressions. I journaled a lot and tried to surround myself with the things that used to make me happy. Eventually the depression shifted. I didn't notice when it outright ended, it was just that I looked back to see how dark a place I had been, and that my present moments were much brighter.

Depression is very hard to go through, but it will pass. Depression, like all feelings, is transient and impermanent.

I really hope you will get with a therapist to help you uncover the causes that might be behind your feelings. You are already making great strides, although painful, to have shifted the physical pain into sadness. This too shall pass and you will have better days ahead!!!!

Wishing you health and happiness!

Neil,
I am currently very depressed so I totally understand. I am going to go back to therapy and honestly if you have having those klinds of thoughts, it's telling you that you really need someone to just get all the junk out to and talk with so please try to find a good therapist.

Neil, if you are having suicidal thoughts, please see a therapist.

I also had depression recurrence after I banished the pain and ended up seeing a therapist when the depression got too difficult to deal with. I think this is a good idea if the depression is serious or suicidal. This is a sign that the emotions may be too large to deal with on your own.

In general, yes, it is progress to go from pain to emotions (and it's solid evidence that the pain is TMS). Emotions are where the real issue lies. You need to treat those, and journaling is a good start. Just don't overwhelm yourself, and be sure to get professional help if you need it.
