Posted - 04/03/2008 : 19:18:07 Hey man, I saw your post about dry mouth. I have had one too for about 6 months. Isn't this **** annoying? Mine is so hard to speak with. I just got back from playing basketball with some friends and thought I was going to choke, it was so dry. I can't wait for a normal mouth again.
The diease your talking about is Sjogren's syndrome, I actually have other symptoms of that too, but they are probably all TMS related and not that actual syndrome... long story.
Anyway, for these 6 months I haven't come accross anyone else with the dry mouth problem so, just wanted to ask you a few things...How much does it bother you? Is it there all the time, 100% of the day(mine is)? Does it make it hard for you to speak? Does it seem to hold you back socially? Can you drink alcohol with it?
Thanks a lot |

Very good response, I like that, it's what I wanted to hear and I know it's true as well. To answer your question... yes, I am very self-conscious, I am very sensitive to critisism and probably fear the possibility of critisism almost all the time. Like you said; a big thing that is keeping this dry mouth around is some kind of constant fear, whether it's my social fears or fear of the dry mouth itself. The dry mouth hinders me socially and so it adds fear to the already existing social fears; it's hard to get over but I definately see your point here and it makes a lot of sense. |

One of the common symptoms of acute anxiety is a persistent dry mouth. It is indeed a mindbody thing in absence of an organic problem. It starts when under persistent stress, constant "fight or flight" response, and is part of the normal reaction we all have when under duress. It is part of the shutting down of the digestive system, which lowers the production of saliva. Many, many people with anxiety conditions have this symptom to greater or lesser degrees, mostly when they need to speak in public.
So the question is why does your body feel like it is constantly in danger? If you have resolved the original problem or let the danger pass (and this could have been anything from job stress to financial crisis to relationship issues, etc.), hte only thing left to trigger the stress response is your own thoughts and worries about the dry mouth itself. We just have to let it go, and it will regain its normal function. Are you a naturally self-conscious, socially phobic person? |

Posted - 04/04/2008 : 08:16:19 Thanks for the response. Mine does sound much different, I can't escape it, it's been all the time, my mouth has never felt normal for the past 6 months straight. I do think about it all the time, It could just be a vicsious cycle. I really hope my case is TMS, something temporary. |

Posted - 04/04/2008 : 06:51:36 No it's not all the time. It's at night mostly in sleep and various times of the day, but not constant. For instance I didn't think about it till you mentioned it, and I'm having no dry mouth right now. I smoke though, and it could be having an effect on my mouth like never before(never had issues with it).
Mine doesn't sound as drastic as yours. I usually notice it when I'm bored or focusing on it. It doesn't effect speech or anything. I'm a singer, and it doesn't effect my voice. I really think it's a TMS thing for me.
If I think about it, it comes up under stress now, and the more I worry about it the more it happens. But if I'm doing something active, I really don't think about it or notice it. Go figure.
EDIT: ALso, I have had almost every TMS symptom conceivable at least once, it wouldn't surprise me that this is just another form.
