Posted - 12/07/2004 : 11:05:38 It has been over a year since learning and applying Dr Sarno’s MBP to my life. I have come a long way in such a short time. I stopped posting on the board at a time in my healing process needed to move on and continue the work of TMS in breaking its cycle on my own. Support is what it is all about, yet all healing of the mind and body starts when we are willing to take responsibility and make changes to our own mind and body. I stayed my course to give back what you guys gave me in my initial quest to understand the TMS theory. At that time I found many more answers to my condition and added a spiritual application and component to the mind/ body connection. This was interesting within my discovery of deep journaling in which I taped into making all former past insults to my condition and made peace with them. I openly shared this and most thought it to be out of place, which I gradually excepted it and no longer pushed the envelope.
I don’t know if during my stay I helped any from what I shared, it was only out of my desire to give back to what was given to me, Hope for Healing in the mist of a terrible cycle of pain which accompanies stress and emotional hardship. Thank you Tennis Tom for original reaching out and welcoming me in to the family of TMS sufferers. Sorry of my absence to those who benefited from my contribution but I became emotional effected by those of you who were also plagued by this terrible syndrome. I needed to break the cycle and move on, working mostly on myself and people in my life whom I am emotionally responsible for.
For those of you who are new to the group I suffered 22 years of back pain due to a traumatic childhood experience in an unstable childhood environment. The past 5 years of my life I was exposed to a host of TMS ailments due to much repressing emotional pain in the responsibility for caring for others. I was plagued with arthritis stiffness, sciatic leg pain, continual neck and upper back spasms, as well as being imprisoned awakening to LBP for 24/7 days a week. This was during the strongest emotional stress and my quest to give all myself to the dedication of healing my son from a so-called untreatable condition (autism). Remember this is what the main stream medical community has also feed us, Saying there is no reason for the condition, nor offering Hope, while only treating symptoms rather than isolating what the original subset of conditions is caused from. In treating his condition he has taught me so much about the human body, mind and sprit, than one can learn in a lifetime of research. This continues to lead me through the search of Hope for Recovery in his conditions as well as been a major contributor to my own recovery. I found my answers to the “truth”, and I hope you all find yours.

One thing that helped me enormously was to understand how the body in the way it is wonderfully made has within it self the ability to heal itself Sarno described this principle but in other words. Now what hit home with me was one of the principles to healing is that it requires rest for the body to initiate this process. And in my condition rest was not obtaining this. As you know I woke each morning without even being able to swing my feet out of bed and touch the floor. It is amazing that your brain never sleeps and works on autopilot maintaining the functions that operate your central nervous system within auto immune system. I made another observation understand the mechanics in how the body heals and how it is capable of healing itself; it is also capable of hurting itself. This I believe is the cycle we need to break and is what reinforced my connection to TMS syndrome and how repressed emotions effect the way our bodies response to the outside world.
In March of 2003 making many connections, I became pain free for over 6 months with the introduction of Dr Sarno’s work. I connected the dots of my syndrome understanding how my reaction to the environment I live in and applying the methodology that includes; programming, conditioning, placebo, and faith in healing I owe Sarno my gratitude, but believe it was also by Gods mercy I was granted a release of the imprisonment in my mind and body for the second time in my life. I call it my second wake up call. To be giving a chance to live life for what my original purpose was for. I am very grateful because I am only 38 years old and some people don’t realize this until they are on their deathbed and then it is pretty much to late to go back and live life in a different prospective.
Yes I still get small bouts with physical reminders that there is still more work to do. But this is what I call my (thorn in the flesh), that I was dealt with experiencing lives trials . One thing I would like to add in closing, a few weeks ago, when I made some major breakthroughs in my sons condition and realized something that reinforced the belief of Hope that comes along with all healing. And I would like to share that with you. How important you have to believe that there is Hope in able to obtain this. Out of curiosity I remembered how Sarno early in his discovery to the TMS pain cycle described this phenomena when treating his patients. I believe in the forward of his original book he wrote that the patients that he developed a relationship with and trusted his care for them, responded the best. He connected with them and they trusted the help he gave. They were willing to change things in their lives and were able to be healed excepting his healing offered to them. So whom should we ultimately trust and who is the great emotional healer and physician in our lives. Thanks again for letting me share this with you.

Posted - 12/16/2004 : 11:43:12 First of all I would like to thank Gary, who started this help forum, providing a place to go looking for answers as well as getting support while they grasp the concept of TMS. Gary made a bigger contribution than he ever thought he challenged me to search for more answers into why? And How? I had the condition. Which lead me to a greater understanding. He also brought a wealth of info into this arena with his style of thinking. Gary once said. “Good educators not only give information, but teach their students how to go about researching, finding the answers for themselves to be more effective in the learning process”
Secondly I must thank Dave (an honorable gentleman), who took the baton from Gary and provides a safe environment for suffering people to come and get support while on this TMS Journey. It takes a man with a big heart to listen to many TMS prone personalities and continues to use discernment in doing so fairly, without letting emotions and conflict take place.
Thirdly, I would thank Guys like Tennis Tom, who continues to welcome new members to the forum, listening to their stories of pain, having compassion and invests the time to understand them. He also has given us the lighter side of TMS, weaving humor into his contribution, which has helped us all along the way.
Thank you all of you who come here and offer help, and thank you for listening to me and allowing me to share during my healing process.

Posted - 12/08/2004 : 12:53:54 Moose, I totally understand where you are coming from, also formally suffering from this, Conditioning my self for many years to hold the pain and stiffness for about 3-4 hours after wakening. And then as I went throughout the day I would tense up get stressed and the cycle continued. Then as night approached all the stresses of the day and the worries of tomorrow would hit me, keeping this repetitive viscous cycle alive manifesting in my thoughts continually.
Emotionally, I needed to heal my past and let go of the pain And physically I needed to learn what was running and holding this pain cycle continuously.
Besides originally believing in the TMS diagnosis I discovered many things along the way. Ya know Gary used to say at least one thing that I agreed with….. Repressed emotions = PAIN He might not of known but I did prescribe to the notion that once in the pain cycle with all the stresses in our daily lives we CAN hold our bodies tight keeping our bodies in spasm compounding the TMS syndrome.
For more of my explanation see Physio clarification>is posture important
http://tmshelp.com/bin/tmsboard.pl?action=view&id=8899&page=6
And Dave has said many times that it is our REACTION to the rage or to what ever we are repressing that need to be modified. And I will add new word. It is all in PROSPECTIVE the way wee look things and the way we respond to them has an enormous effect on our current emotional state which transfers to our physical condition as well.
I know it is easy to say, but if you know what the work of TMS methods are. Sometimes you need to go back and to re learn and apply the basics.
IMO I firmly believe this what has helped me the most was to understand all the underlying factors that contributed this cycle.
Journal, Journal , and deep Journal,
Make peace with your past with as many relationships/and emotional stresses/traumatic experiences
Try to Go back to where the pain cycle started and connect the dots to your physical condition, eliminating all placebos, conditioned responses as well as ALL forms of program that have you believe is the reason for your condition. OTHER THAN the emotional component and isolate these as well.
I have posted many times on morning back pain, anger, jounaling and the recovery process, conditioned responses, physical clarification ect.. Se if you can do a search of them possible go back to the old forum as well.
I don’t think there is a search on the old forum is there Dave? That is where I made many of my connections, however I was deterred from sharing them and was not taken too seriously. Another point I would like to make is after accepting I had TMS I needed to understand its purpose and function in my life, while doing the work, well after trying to find out WHY? I had TMS and WHEN? It first set in; no one the old board had an answer, nor wanted to explore this way of thinking together. So it was my quest to find this out myself which would enable me to understand this complex syndrome in able to treat it.
A couple of Q’S I asked my self I didn’t always have this condition so what caused it? And in definition…… it is a syndrome, so that means it is a result of another underlying component..
And the biggest thing that helped me is I never EXCEPTED that I would always have it. I guess my strong faith and my son helped me again. I didn’t believe that neither hitting pillows nor shouting as loud as I can was going to get rid of MY ANGER that was inside me. I looked deep inside, didn’t like what I seen…..It was scary, and ugly, but it was reality and I needed to become authentic to who I really was and needed to CHANGE something’s about myself the way I think and my response to the world on the outside.
Besides, that there is one more thing that many don’t agree with too much and I had a hard time tying to share it, that is the spiritual component. Now forgive me, but I never understood this gremlin thing…..Ill explain, Many people describe a gremlin that is controlling us, I just think that we need to stop blaming something out side of ourselves for the condition that WE are in.
An example for HEALING a drug attic or an alcoholic must first except he is one, (THE DIOOGNOSES) And MUST BELIVE IT IS HIM AND HIS BEHAVIOUR as well as HIS PATERN OF THINKING THAT NEEDS TO CHANGE to be able to be helped and HEALED from this chronic cycle, syndrome, sickness ect…..
We need to take responsibility for our own emotional makeup and deal with some issues that need change and healing. We need to look within, and not BLAME our condition on an outside situation or circumstance. Pretty hard to swallow, yet simple to say.
Its like obesity, now don’t get mad I am a little overweight and in no way am I hammering anyone suffering with this condition. Yes you might have an overactive thyroid or some other factor contributing to weight gain and poor health, but is going take a different look at the way your life revolves around food, change the way you think about it. Clean out your colon and start repairing your digestive system that is overloaded overworked and stressed. The good advice to eat right and exercise is still the best advice. Taking diet pills getting your stomach stapled, lypo suction ect… is only treating the symptom. Like many other forms of the mainstream medical approach that we all are aware of.
Moose I can’t get all tied up into doing a functional assessment with your condition, but if you permit I will make one quick observation from your current posts. Now don’t take me wrong I know you are frustrated looking for answers but You are exposed to a pattern of thinking that is counterproductive, focussing on these types of Q’S
Chronic Back Pain Shrinks Brain, Study Finds Anxiety/panic strategies A huge event proving Sarno is wrong!
Ya see what has helped me the most was from the beginning was to believe there is HOPE FOR RECVERY And to continually look at success stories and what has made them successful, never prescribing to pessimistic view anymore. I did that for more than half my life already.
Tom what did you do? This was supposed to be a short visit, what happened,? I guess it is my nature to help when someone asks. But there is also some business that I need to settle before I move on….

Posted - 12/07/2004 : 14:05:59 hi kenny,
glad to hear you've had such great success with your healing. i'm about 60 to 70% healed from my low back TMS, but i cannot seem to get beyond waking up with it every morning. i've tried numerous pre-sleep strategies to thwart my brain from doing whatever it does while i sleep to make me wake up with this God-awful morning stiffness, yet nothing seems to help, at least not consistantly. can you recommend any strategy that i might try to address the morning LBP specifically?
thanks, Moose |
