I've been suffering with chronic pain for a little over 3 years now. I worked in an office and got tingling sensations in the hands in 2002 or so, and later and more severe in 2004, ala carpal tunnel. Eventually I got neck pain after I got a new car with bad bucket seats that turned into severe electrical shock type neck pain and and numbness in both arms and soon after in the legs when I continued to work thru symptoms.

Every day I'll get various degrees of numbness and tingling, tightness, little fluttery twitches all over my body, from head to toes and including eyes. These symptoms often get worse with actions or postures, but sometimes do not. Especially tight in the chest and right shoulder area, lower arms and neck and traps where things first started getting froggy. Anxiety and anticipation often serves to make it worse. I don't work in an office any more, but often play guitar and work out some. I've actually gotten better at my instrument and am in better shape than I have been for years now from limited working out. No brutal shocks since the initial onset and I seem to feel better. My head does seem to be a bit in a haze. Of course, I quit drinking a little over a year ago. I don't work 40 hours a week in an office anymore, but I do work full time.

The MD and DOs had no clue so they sent me off to the neurologist. I've had bloodtests, cervical MRI, all sorts of upper body x-rays and a needle emg. All came back negative. A little bitty herniated disc in the mri, but nothing anyone got excited about.

The neurologist who said it may be tendinitis at first referred me to a rheumatologist figuring I had rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia, but the money ran out so I never went. My physical therapist said my fascia was all out of whack, but money for PT ran out. Acupuncture helped the first time when symptoms hit most severe, but not really after that. Chiropractic felt nice, but no real help and the money ran out. The deep tissue masseuse said my muscles felt all sorts of tight and out of whack. I saw all these medical professionals within the first year, and have made due the next two years without them.

Now money is coming in a little bit, but where to turn next?
Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone else?

Does this sound like TMS, fibro, Multiple Sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic myofascial pain, super bad repetitive strain or something else to anyone? I'd prefer to be selective in the doctors I decide to go to next rather than chase all at once.

thanks!
Mike

ps- I'm still a little bit OCD (but getting better), a frequent urinator, and a recovering hypercritical perfectionist.

mhr, your desire to confirm that every odd physical symptom you have has been had by someone, somewhere, as TMS is understandable and common but really quite pointless. Stop thinking physical. The symptoms are not the point. Buy the book. Work on the method. See a TMS doc if you need confirmation. If you have seen so many other docs already you don't need to see any more to rule stuff out. :)

Often our tms symptoms are as unique as our fingerprints.

Besides, we all know bucket seats are the handiwork of satan /jk

Anyone else ever get daily, somewhat frequent occurrences of fluttery muscle twitches with TMS?

Not wholesale jerking of muscles, but fluttery twitches?

Sounds like TMS. RSI-type stuff pretty much always seems to be, and your pattern of "This treatment helped, but then it stopped helping" is classic and almost exactly the experience I had.

You got all the tests and they came back clear, and you ran out of the money for the expensive and unhelpful physical treatments. Sounds like you have nothing to lose to try the treatment from a $12 book. :)

Fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, and RSI are all TMS. If neurology cleared you, then I doubt you have MS. Finally, your symptoms don't sound anything like RA. Your symptoms are all compatible with TMS and given your perfectionistic/OCD tendencies, that remains the most likely diagnosis. Personally, I'd give Dr. Schubiner's online program a try at www.yourpainisreal.com. Best of luck to you.

Best,
MK
