Posted - 06/13/2004 : 21:28:04 Hi all, I recently read Dr. Sarno's Healing Back pain and believe TMS to be the root cause of my back/pelvic/leg pain. I've been trying to focus on thinking psychologically as described in the book and have experienced an increase in pain levels. I posted recently on the old forum and most people replied this was normal in the sense that the TMS is trying to fight my efforts. I'm contuing to work through the pain, but I noticed a lot of people writing about doing the workbook and journaling; can someone explain this? Is there additional reading material that you can recommend, or some mental exercises from a workbook that I can find to help dig into my treatment?
Thanks --Nick |

Posted - 06/15/2004 : 09:52:00 What kind of journaling is everyone doing? Originally I wrote some lists re: my childhood, current stesses, personalitly traits like perfectionism. I must admit that I only read it each day for a few weeks as I felt so uncomfortable and was experiencing a great deal of anxiety (clearly TMS symptoms). My terrible sciatic/hip pain has totally gone - I can now do any exercise I want. But I am still suffering from chronic constipation (regardless of fiber supplements - can't have grains of any kind) and I have mild rosacea. Other than that - nothing. It would be nice to solve the digestive issues and I am sure it is TMS related. What specifically are you all doing? I do not have a workbook. |

Posted - 06/14/2004 : 09:18:13 I would have to agree that there is not a lot of substance to the MindBody workbook but all the same I do think it has helped me. Each day, there are 3-6 pretty basic questions mostly about how you are feeling or what you are angry or scared of and some questions about your childhood. The point of it is to give you a starting place for your journaling. Although, I often got way off topic from the questions as I followed what I seemed to want to write about, without the guidance I found that I might just sit there and not even be able to start writing. I have read or bought most of the books I have seen posted here because my feeling has been that the cost of the books is very small compared to what I was paying in co-pays. And besides, different things work for different people and the only way to find out is to try it for yourself.

Posted - 06/13/2004 : 21:48:37 Assume the workbook being referred to is Dr Schecter's (http://www.mindbodymedicine.com/) This is a 30 day program to help you through the process of "thinking psychologically", and in understanding the TMS theory. I was a bit disappointed in the amount of "white space" that was included for the money (there are sections in the A4 bound book for you to write). Basically, the technique involves writing down (journaling) your thoughts, and more particularly, your feelings. The act of writing can help you learn to recognise your emotions, and how they affect you.
Another book to consider is Sarno's later one, The MindBody Prescription, which includes some further techniques to use, based in part on readers' experiences in reading Healing Back Pain. |
