I just read Toms Post on the string with the wonderful story by UKjames
I am 100% abso-frickin-lutely certain growing pains are TMS...first hand!
My older son was severely traumatized by 9/11,as I'm sure the rest of Americans were.I know my son has OCD tendencies from observation and like any good OCDer,once he gets an Idea in his head it NEVER lets go....we'd be playing ball and he'd stop to look at EVERY plane that went overhead...and we lived in the landing /take-off path of Burbank airport so that's every 5 minutes.
Than...
...I get a call from my wife saying she had to rush my son to a chiropractor as his neck had completely "FROZE" and he was in agony....and of course he filled her head with all sorts of structural injury mythology.
I bolted home to get to him before any of those LIES could sink in.When I got home I was shocked to find he had dyed his hair fire engine red!!
It was too obvious.
Dad: So...your neck hurts
Son: yeah...the doctor says I'm having growing pains,and that I've been playing too much Baseball and can't play for 2 weeks(NOTE* he's the #1 starting pitcher on his team,and #3 hitter)
DAD: Hmmmmm....how did your haircut go over at school?
SON: Uhhhh..I got teased and called names all day long and almost got into a fight
Dad:....do you think that might have had anything to do with the pain?
Son: But...uh...the doctor says it's Baseball and growing pains
Dad: Ok,but you're going to have to make a decision....you can either talk to me about what's going on,or be in pain for the next 10 years while you keep growing.....you can hang up your cleats now.
So,we had a long long talk...about 9/11,about problems at school,about him missing Mom now that she worked full time,about him being mad at me for a laundry list of Father/son issues.
He ended up breaking down in tears and I just hugged him until he stopped crying..a good 10 minutes worth of pent up emotion.
Than we went on the lawn,and he pitched for 45 minutes...went to the batting cages and hit for an hour.
My wife came home and asked how his neck felt...
Son: Ohhh...uhh....It's fine.
growing pains
they are real...but what's REALLY hurting?

Right on. Way to really be a dad!
I had terrible growing pains as a child, where my legs would sort of paralyzed with spasm/pain. Luckily my mom never took me to a chiro so when the traditional MDs said it was "growing pains," and that the pain would come and go until it eventually went away, it did.
I'm sure they wouldn't have come back so often or so severely, if my family had been more communicative and not so dependent on me to be the "good kid."
It makes me wonder how many cases of childhood asthma (it seems to be an epidemic now) are really "growing pains." |

Fantastic. Truly.
I'm getting so much out of your posts and I've been to Sarno! I think if he ever has pain he should call you.
Your kids are lucky. We're all lucky you came on this forum.
