Posted - 02/21/2008 : 16:05:32 Hi, my name is John, I'm a 19 year old college student. I read "The Divided Mind" by Dr. Sarno and could relate to a lot of what he was talking about(being a perfectionist and people pleaser). This is what brings me to believe I have TMS equivilants. About 5 months ago when I moved away to college I suddenly developed a dry mouth. It was extremily bothersome(and still is) and I obsessed about it. After a month went by and this wasn't going away I went to see a doctor who mentioned the word Sjogren's Syndrome, he didn't say I had it, he just mentioned it. I started looking this syndrome up on the internet, finding all the related symptoms, which dry mouth was one. A few weeks later I started developing the other symptoms related to this disorder like dry eyes, dry skin, joint pain, and numbness. For the past several months I have been extremily scared that I have this syndrome(because it's chronic) and my obsession is ridiculous. The thing that tells me I probably don't have it is that the symptoms developed after I read about them. What do you guys think about this? Does this sound like TMS equivilants? How should I get rid of these annoying symptoms? Thanks. |

Posted - 02/27/2008 : 08:36:44 Dont worry about time.It will take as much as it takes.
I was going for therapy for about 5 moths and it helped me a lot. Also i talked to myself a lot.And read the daily reminder everyday. Here is mine,it may help you.Read it a couple times a day.
1.The pain is due to TMS,not to a structural abnormality 2.The direct reason for the pain is mild oxygen deprivation 3.TMS is a harmless condition caused by my repressed emotions 4.The principal emotion is my repressed ANGER 5.TMS exists only to distract my attentions from the emotions 6.Since my back(you put here your problem) is basically normal there is nothing to fear 7.Therefore,physical activity is not dangerous 8.And I MUST resume all normal physical activity 9.I will not be concerned or intimidated by the pain 10.I will shift my attention from pain to the emotional issues 11.I intend to be in control-NOT my subconscious mind 12.I must think Psychological at all times,NOT physical. 13.This is war,TMS is enemy,I will fight till the end,and I will win.
Try to see what emotions are cousing you trouble. If not able to go for therapy try journaling. Its very very important to recognize emotions that are problem.AND very very very important get back to your life as soon as posible.Do everything you want and you did before tms,act like you dont have it.
Let us know how is your progres.
P.S. sorry about my english.HAHAHA |

Posted - 02/27/2008 : 08:05:07 Thank you. I am sure that this is in fact TMS, i have truly accepted it. The question now is treatment. I have read the book and done research on it everyday now for 2 weeks and there is no difference in symptoms, for some reason I see myself taking forever to be "cured". I hope to see the improvement that many others see. It is relieving to know it's not chronic but it's frustrating to know treatment can "cure" but I just don't see it happening. I still worry about how long this will be around, being 19 and in college I do want to be able to drink alcohol again at some point of my college life and with this that cannot happen. |

Posted - 02/27/2008 : 07:29:03 I think its been about almost 2 years until i figured its TMS.It started with burning on urination. Then i did every test on and it was all ok.But burning was still here. Then some doctor told me it could be inflamation of prostate that cant be detected.I read about prostate problems on internet and slowly got some pains that are normal for ppl that have prostate inflamation.Tried all kinds of treatment for prostate and nothing worked. Then somewhere on internet i found that same problem could be related to thing called PNE.Its pudendal nerve entrapment.I read about it and after 1 month i developed every single pain i read on internet about PNE.Luckly, one day i found story of some guy who had similar problems as me and solved them usung TMS.i decided i will give it aa shot.I bought a book and it made perfect sense.I realised that when i am going on mountains to ride snowboard i have 0 pain, and my urination problem is also gone.No disorder is working like that.Especially nerve entrapment.I am falling a lot during snowboarding and no pain.Funny.Other thing amde some sense too ,and then i started to do TMS work every day. After 7 days all pains wre gone.I was extremly happy. But soon it all came back, which is clasic for tms,but then i dint know that.I was scared. Then i found this forum, get a lot support and after 7 or 8 months i am almost compleatly "cured".Now i have sometimes some problems, but they are minor.Ussualy when i am under somekind of stress.
I wish you good luck, and speddy recovery. |

Posted - 02/26/2008 : 23:37:19 I feared horrible back pain after seeing a woman in ER (I took my step-dad there) with excrutiating back pain. I couldn't shake the image of that poor woman in pain. A month later, viola, I "put my back out" in the worse way and was in horrific pain. Afer weeks of pain a friend of mine told me about Dr. Sarno's books. Her husband and friend were cured through the books. After reading the first book I realized I have TMS.
Yep, I do believe that your brain finds the opening target and TMS will plague you until you understand how it works.

Posted - 02/26/2008 : 12:34:18 What were your symptoms, what was the syndrome? How long ago did you realize TMS, how did you realize it, and what did you do to get better? Thanks, I'm sure what I have is TMS with all this insight, I just need to know how to get rid of it. |

Posted - 02/25/2008 : 17:26:45 You posted two similar messages within a short time, so Dave may have "housekept" by deleting one. I couldn't tell if it was intentional -- sometimes things get double-posted by accident -- but it's best to keep things clean, at any rate.

Posted - 02/25/2008 : 17:10:30 yea that thread was randomly deleted, I do have similar ones but the one you responded to is gone. I don't know why, weird. |

Posted - 02/25/2008 : 17:08:20 You might be right but even when I go to my profile and look for posted messages it isn't there. Hmmmm...I swear I replied to his post this morning and he even replied back so I know my reply went through if only temporarily. His reply to me is missing too. Is senility a possible effect of TMS??? |

Posted - 02/25/2008 : 17:03:16 I think he posted similar posts more than once so your reply is probably elsewhere. |

Posted - 02/25/2008 : 15:15:16 Am I hallucinating or has my original response to John and his reply to me been deleted from this thread? Not that it really matters, I guess, but I don't think I'm going crazy...

Posted - 02/25/2008 : 11:59:46 Thanks guys, everything you said about suggestibilty makes perfect sense to me. I always thought it was just so weird that everytime I thought of a symptom it would physically be there a few days later. I am so lucky to have found Dr. Sarno's book so I can stop these mind tricks now. I will do my best to treat this and hopefully my symptoms fully resolve themselves. |

Posted - 02/25/2008 : 10:50:12 Hi John,
I suggest you take a calm look at how it feels to have moved away from home. Try to acknowledge your true feelings and see if this is contributing to some major anxiety, fear and stress - possibly anger? about leaving home. It is a huge transition and acknowledging and honoring the psychological implications (every time you experience symptoms) would be a good focus. Try to think of this every time a symptom presents itself: look to your transitions right now. Give it a good shot.
Having a doctor imply that you have a syndrome is very powerful for the unconscious mind. If you fit the personality, you probably have the type of unconscious mind that loves to latch onto these kinds of things to justify creating symptoms for yourself. It is a trick of the mind: rather allow yourself to look deeply into your own psychology.
Keep reading The Divided Mind; make your lists; don't give up - it really is the solution.

Posted - 02/25/2008 : 10:28:35 Dear John,
Here's one possible interpretation. I believe that TMS symptoms are often chosen by suggestion. So for example if you are driving your car for a few hours you back might develop slight discomfort from lack of movement and the mind takes this suggestion and develops more serious symptoms around this - i.e. severe back pain.
As you know a dry mouth is associated with fear. Is it possible you had real fear at the time you moved away and this fear precipitated a dry mouth. This dry mouth idea was taken by the mind and used as your TMS symptom.
Furthermore when you read the symptoms of Sjogren's Syndrome your mind equally took these other symptoms as a suggestion.
This is just an interesting question to me. In terms of treatment - my understanding is that you don;t really need to fully understand the reasons - just acknowledge your repressed emotions and do the exercises every day and you will see an improvement. |

Yup, completely classic example of the patterns of TMS. Lots of people on the board have reported learning of some dread syndrome and later developing its symptoms.
This is dealt with in the same way that any other TMS equivalent is: accept a psychological original, stop all physical treatment, stop the fear and worry, and return to normal activity.
