Posted - 01/16/2008 : 14:50:25 Hello, I have had sciatica and so-called piriformis syndrome for almost 20 months now. Just 10 days ago I reached the conclusion that this is TMS. I am reading Dr. Sarno's books. I live in a somewhat remote place in upstate NY, so I am trying to solve this on my own, with knowledge. Thankfully, I have started doing all my sports again; yoga, the gym, x-c skiing and tele skiing. For example, I was at the mt. most of today and am supposed to go to the gym tonight. I am in a lot of pain and do not know what to do. I am so tired of this and am trying hard to identify the emotional issues involved. I think I have, but how do I know if I should just push through the pain or not? Thanks very much in advance for any assistance, Joann |

Posted - 01/17/2008 : 18:05:52 Yes, I am guilty of being an eastern back country skier!

Heck - it isn't just decent bc skiing in the Adks., it is sometimes great. I've skied out west and in the Alps, etc., and I think the Adks. measure up pretty well. It can rather technical since the trails are so narrow and steep, but when it is good, it is as good as any bc skiing in the world. Just my opinion, of course.
Fortunately, I have not had any Achilles issues. I have an old ACL rebuild, and then this silly piriformis thing. I am a little hooked on exercise, so it was a problem for me to stop when the docs said my back was falling apart. Dr. Sarno's approach makes a lot of sense to me, I have absolutely no doubts. I like the fact that I don't have to give up my exercising. I am still struggling a bit, but I think it will come around - it's only been two weeks since I started reading the books. teleskiqueen |

Can't say I've had piriformis, though about 12 years ago I went the rounds with my back. Now at age 51 I have absolutely no trouble with it, and am 100% sure it was TMS (though I didn't know about it then). I violate pretty much all of the conventional back wisdom.
Curious as to whether you've ever dealt with achilles issues? That is definitely the bane of my existence these days - I have absolutely no joint problems, but an achilles will definitely ruin your day.

Posted - 01/17/2008 : 05:25:54 Thank you for the response Amy. What is so remarkable is that I can bc ski up a mountain for five hours with no pain, and then can't bear to stand up to make dinner!!! I am working on it though, and at least I know my back isn't falling apart! |

Posted - 01/16/2008 : 15:50:58 Hi teleskiqueen--
I don't come here a ton but I am also an athlete who suffered on and off from "piriformis syndrome" for about 6 years. I did chiropractic, physical therapy and saw a couple of doctors before I finally came to the conclusion one night that at least part of my discomfort was psychological. I searched the web and came upon Dr. Sarno's work.
Reading his books, I realized that much of my pain was directly related to my irrational fear that I had injured/would injure something that would end my athletic life forever. I quit constantly icing my piriformis, taking ibuprophen, rolling on my tennis ball, sleeping with a pillow under my knees and limiting my activities. Of course, certain things took longer for me to give up. Instead of obsessing about my painful hip I'd acknowledge it was uncomfortable but I'd go ahead and do whatever I'd planned to do. Sometimes I found that the more I moved around and stayed active, the better I'd do. It took awhile but I've been pain free for months now. And I'm pretty much doing any activity I'd like.
Best of luck to you.

Posted - 01/16/2008 : 15:02:48 I know Monte on the board here dealt w/ piriformis (sciatica too I think) for a long time. He has a website "runningpain.com" that he promotes tms treatment on. He's responded to my emails. |
