I just revisited the chapter contributed by Dr. Samuel Mann to TDM and I think it is absolutely fascinating. I think his ideas have the potential to lead to the same sort of paradigm shift that TMS has had for patients with musculoskeletal complaints. Needless to say, anytime a psychosomatic etiology is suggested opponents will line up to reject it, but those that are willing to accept the diagnosis may find themselves as fortunate as many TMS patients are in treating their disorder.

This leads me to two questions: (1) I know that tachycardia (a fast heart rate) can be a TMS equivalent as I have experienced this myself at times. I wonder if it is a SUSTAINED tachycardia (or even a mildly elevated HR) due to chronic increased SNS tone that is partially contributory to developing neurogenic hypertension (i.e., is there any place for filtering out these specific neurogenic hypertensive patients based on HR variations alone). Any thoughts? (2) Has anyone with hypertension ever approached it as a TMS equivalent? If so, what were the results? I know that Dr. Mann suggests beta-blocker treatment, but I'm curious as to whether an entirely mindbody approach can be successful in these specific patients. Thanks.

Best,
MK

MK, I had (sometimes still get) TMS hypertension. I think it's important to work with a doctor to determine if medication is necessary. Personally speaking, if my BP was high all the time, I would go on meds. But so far, mine has been episodic.

I went to ER twice for my high BP which correlated with migraines. My bp is normally 120/70, but during times of great emotional duress, my bp has gone as high as 240/110, hence the need for medical intervention/supervision.

I check my BP regularly and sometimes it gets a little uppity (but not THAT high). That is my cue to do some eval of the situations that are probably escalating it. I try to calm my mind, nurture myself, and do some meditation, listen and read Sarno, specifically that Chapter. If I ever find I develop high bp that doesn't go normal after my mental work, I'd see my doc and determine if medicine is necessary.

Again, I don't think this is a symptom that should be managed without a doctor's input.
