8 MENTAL STEPS TO PERFECT HEALTH Top What is the best medicine for diseased bodies and minds?
1. CLEAR CONSCIENCE
There is a close association between the physical being and the soul. When a human being is in harmony with God few problems of the physical body are unsolvable‚ no matter how strange and disturbing the symptoms might be. With His help nothing is impossible.
There is health in obedience to God's law. The consciousness of right–doing is the best medicine for diseased bodies and minds. The special blessing of God resting upon the receiver is health and strength. A person whose mind is quiet and satisfied in God is in the pathway to health
"My son‚ forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days‚ and long life‚ and peace‚ shall they add to thee… It shall be health to thy navel‚ and marrow to thy bones." Proverbs 3:1‚ 2‚ 8. The immune system cells form in the bone marrow; this means that a clear conscience directly builds the immune system.
Remember that sin is the first cause of disease for‚ if there had never been any sin‚ there would have never been any disease. Accordingly in the Bible‚ forgiveness of sin is connected with the healing of disease. Therefore‚ the cause of disease is sin. All plans or means of getting rid of disease utterly miss the mark if they do not take into consideration the getting rid of sin as the principal object.
Cheerfulness and a clear conscience are better than drugs and will be effective agents in your restoration to health.
My great auntie lived to eat. Always ate the wrong food in the wrong quantity. Needless to say‚ she was diabetic and obese. She never exercised in her life and avoided‚ like a plague‚ anything that was close to good health. She loved to travel but did not have much opportunity to do so. She had two unhappy marriages. She broke ALL the health laws except one‚ and still lived to a ripe old age of 86. She was an obstinate optimist. I once asked her what her second husband was like. With an expression of delightful reminiscence‚ she said‚ "He was lovely; he always used to take me out."
2. HAPPY HEART
There is a physiological truth – truth that we need to consider – in the scripture: "A merry rejoicing heart doeth good like a medicine." Proverbs 17:22.
Your thoughts is the food that your brain feeds on. You can eat foods that steal from your body‚ like sugar; and you can think thoughts that steal from your body‚ like anger. We can choose what we think‚ and in doing so‚ we choose between health and disease.
Redford Williams‚ M.D.‚ author of the book Anger Kills‚ wrote: "Getting angry is like taking a small dose of some slow-acting poison every day of your life." Grief‚ anxiety‚ discontent‚ remorse‚ guilt‚ distrust‚ all tend to break down the life-forces and to invite decay and death.
In his book‚ Anatomy of an Illness‚ Norman Cousins describes his recovery from ankylosing spondylitis‚ a disease of "unknown etiology" with a survival chance of one in 500. In a desperate bid to survive‚ Cousins rejected his drug therapy‚ hired a projector and amused himself watching old movie comedies. He was following a hunch he had acquired from reading Dr Selye's book The Stress of Life‚ and his changed state of mind‚ helped by laughter‚ improved diet and his own determination‚ was the turning point from which he recovered full health in a few months.
A hearty laugh a day may keep the doctor away. Laughter has innumerable other benefits. It increases blood flow as much as a 15- to 30-minute workout. It proves a potent anti-stress factor‚ decreases asthmatic attacks‚ increases stamina‚ relieves arthritic pain‚ ensures good sleep and elevates mood. Since the serotonin levels go up after laughter‚ it is an effective antidote for depression too. Even‚ breastfed babies with eczema experienced milder symptoms if their mothers laughed hours before feeding them.
"All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast." Proverbs 15:15
I do not feel happy‚ how can I obtain happiness?
Prune off every decaying leaf and withered branch from your life and manifest only freshness and vigor. Cheerfulness is created by considering the great blessings we enjoy because we are the children of God. We gain happiness through the pleasure of blessing others.
What thoughts should I think of to promote health of body and soul?
"Finally‚ brethren‚ whatsoever things are true‚ whatsoever things are honest‚ whatsoever things are just‚ whatsoever things are pure‚ whatsoever things are lovely‚ whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue‚ and if there be any praise‚ think on these things." Philippians 4:8
3. GRATITUDE & PRAISE
"Be careful for nothing [i.e. be anxious about nothing]; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." Philippians 4:6
Every blessing comes from God’s bountiful hand and nothing tends more to promote health of body and of soul than does a spirit of gratitude and praise. It is a positive duty to resist melancholy‚ discontented thoughts and feelings – as much as it is a duty to pray.
"In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18. This command is an assurance that even the things which appear to be against us will work for our good. God would not bid us be thankful for that which would do us harm.
But many do not leave their cases with God; they encourage weakness and disease by worrying about themselves. If those would cease repining and rise above depression and gloom‚ their recovery would be more sure. They should remember with gratitude how long they enjoyed the blessing of health; and should this precious boon be restored to them‚ they should not forget that they are under renewed obligations to their Creator. When the ten lepers were healed‚ only one returned to find Jesus and give Him glory. Let us not be like the unthinking nine whose hearts were untouched by the mercy of God.
What will happen when I start to praise God?
"Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart." Psalm 37:4
4.POWER OF PRAYER & CLAIMING GOD’S PROMISES
Do not be stressed; instead take your problems to God in prayer. Keep your wants‚ your joys‚ your sorrows‚ your cares‚ and your fears before God. You cannot burden Him; you cannot weary Him. He who numbers the hairs of your head is not indifferent to the wants of His children. "The Lord is very pitiful‚ and of tender mercy." James 5:11. His heart of love is touched by our sorrows and even by our utterances of them. Take to Him everything that perplexes the mind. Nothing‚ is too great for Him to bear‚ for He holds up worlds‚ He rules over all the affairs of the universe. Nothing that in any way concerns our peace is too small for Him to notice. There is no chapter in our experience too dark for Him to read; there is no perplexity too difficult for Him to unravel. No calamity can befall the least of His children‚ no anxiety harass the soul‚ no joy or cheer‚ no sincere prayer escape the lips‚ of which our heavenly Father is unobservant‚ or in which He takes no immediate interest. "He healeth the broken in heart‚ and bindeth up their wounds." Psalm 147:3.
The relations between God and each soul are as distinct and full as though there were not another soul upon the earth to share His watch-care‚ not another soul for whom He gave His beloved Son.
Jesus promised: "And all things‚ whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer‚ believing‚ ye shall receive." Matthew 21:22
He also said: "If ye abide in me‚ and my words abide in you‚ ye shall ask what ye will‚ and it shall be done unto you." John 15:7
"The prayer of faith shall save the sick‚ and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins‚ they shall be forgiven him." James 5:15
Perseverance in prayer has been made a condition of receiving. Unceasing prayer is the unbroken union of the soul with God‚ so that life from God flows into our life; and from our life‚ purity and holiness flow back to God.
Without believing in the power of prayer‚ how do I know prayer really works?
Larry Dossey‚ M.D.‚ in his book Healing Words‚ described ‘one of the best kept secrets in medical science: benefits of prayer.’ Dr. Dossey defines prayerfulness as ‘a feeling of love‚ compassion and empathy toward another‚" and he explains that prayer is ‘a powerful and legitimate (if often overlooked) method of healing." Dossey uses an impressive array of evidence to show that prayer can have a positive effect on health. A 1988 study conducted in San Francisco investigated the effect of prayer on thecardiovascular health of 393 coronary-care patients. Unknown to the patient involved‚ one group was prayed for and the other was not. At the end of the ten-month study‚ the prayed-for group was five times less likely to require antibiotics and three times less likely to develop a condition in which the lungs get filled with fluid. Dr. Dossey’s research also found that prayer can have beneficial effects in various living cells and organisms‚ including mice‚ chicks‚ fungi‚ yeast‚ bacteria and enzymes.
In the October 2001 issue of Journal of Reproductive Health‚ researchers at Columbia University – expressing great surprise at their own profound findings – announced that when complete strangers prayed for women who went to a fertility clinic‚ the women had twice the pregnancy rate as women for whom prayers were not offered.
5. FORGIVENESS
At this point it is important realize that one cannot experience the joy and peace of God without having first experienced His forgiveness. The burden of guilt is the foundation of many maladies.
In the Bible‚ the paralytic found in Christ healing for both the soul and the body. The spiritual healing was followed by physical restoration. This lesson should not be overlooked. There are today thousands suffering from physical disease‚ who‚ like the paralytic‚ are longing for the message‚ "Thy sins are forgiven." The burden of sin‚ with its unrest and unsatisfied desires‚ is the foundation of their maladies. They can find no relief until they come to the Healer of the soul. The peace which He alone can give would impart vigor to the mind‚ and health to the body.
God promised that "If we confess our sins‚ He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins‚ and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9. In the consciousness of sins forgiven there is inexpressible peace and joy and rest.
Remember the promise of God. He says‚ "Return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. Take with you words‚ and turn to the Lord; say unto him‚ Take away all iniquity‚ and receive us graciously." The Lord answers‚ "I will heal their backsliding‚ I will love them freely; for mine anger is turned away from him." Break with the enemy‚ and seek the presence of Jesus; with tears of confession and with penitential grief urge once more your case at the throne of grace. The Lord will hear‚ the Lord will answer; return ere it be too late.
When we come to ask mercy and blessing from God we should have a spirit of love and forgiveness in our own hearts. How can we pray‚ "Forgive us our debts‚ as we forgive our debtors‚" and yet indulge an unforgiving spirit? Matthew 6:12. If we expect our own prayers to be heard we must forgive others in the same manner and to the same extent as we hope to be forgiven.
What can make a heart so light‚ what can spread so much sunshine through the soul‚ as the sense of sins forgiven? The peace of Christ is life and health. We shall need to have the love of Christ‚ that we may not cherish an unforgiving spirit. An unforgiving heart cannot be healed.
It is the love of God that draws us unto Him‚ and that love cannot touch our hearts without creating love for our brethren.
6. TO LOVE OTHERS
Giving love is a powerful healer. In Love‚ Medicine and Miracles Dr. Bernies Siegel says: "If I told patients to raise their blood levels of immune globins or killer T-cells‚ no one would know how. But if I teach them to love themselves and others fully‚ the same change happens automatically."
When you love‚ your immune system is energized to fight against the disease. Love changes the chemical pathways of the brain‚ and this will affect your body's resistance. The love of God is all the more powerful.
The love which Christ diffuses through the whole being is a vitalizing power. Every vital part – the brain‚ the heart‚ and the nerves – is touches with healing. By it the highest energies of the being are roused to activity. It frees the soul from the guilt‚ sorrow‚ anxiety and care‚ which crush the life forces. With it comes serenity and composure. It implants in the soul – health-giving joy – that nothing earthly can destroy.
7. HELPING THE NEEDY
Doing good is an excellent remedy for disease. The pleasure of doing good to others imparts a glow to the feelings which flashes through the nerves and quickens the circulation of the blood and induces mental and physical health.
"Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness‚ to undo the heavy burdens‚ and to let the oppressed go free‚ and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry‚ and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked‚ that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning‚ and thine health shall spring forth speedily." Isaiah 58:7‚ 8
If the mind is free and happy‚ from a consciousness of right doing and a sense of satisfaction in causing happiness to others‚ it creates a cheerfulness that will react upon the whole system‚ causing a freer circulation of the blood and a toning up of the entire body. The blessing of God is a healing power‚ and those who are abundant in benefiting others will realize that wondrous blessing in both heart and life.
One of the surest hindrances to the recovery of the sick is the centering of attention upon themselves. Many invalids feel that everyone should give them sympathy and help‚ when what they need is to have their attention turned away from themselves‚ to think of and care for others.
God imparts His blessing to us that we may impart to others. When we ask Him for our daily bread‚ He looks into our hearts to see if we will share the same with those more needy than ourselves. When we pray‚ "God be merciful to me a sinner‚" He watches to see if we will manifest compassion toward those with whom we associate. This is the evidence of our connection with God‚ that we are merciful even as our Father in heaven is merciful.
The widow and the fatherless have the strongest claims upon our tender sympathy. They are the objects of the Lord's special care. They are lent to Christians in trust for God. "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this‚ To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction‚ and to keep himself unspotted from the world." James 1:27.
To love and to labor is the sum of living‚ and yet how many think they live who neither labor nor love.
8. SWEET WORDS & WORDS OF FAITH
What is the importance of sweet words?
In their book Food and Love‚ Gary Smalley and Rex Russell compiled the following research that was most revealing:
Medical research has studied the effect of chronic quarrelling on a persons’ health and have found that couples and roommates who frequently quarrel tend to have more illnesses than do the people in amicable relationships. Couples and roommates who have constant fights suffer a weakening of their immune systems and are generally less healthy than people who react amicable with friends and family.
Researchers of Ohio State University Medical Center brought 90 couples into a lab and asked them to resolve an issue of disagreement; continuous blood monitoring for 24 hours revealed that couples who had high levels of hostility displayed significant deterioration on eight measures of the immune system. The more hostile you are during a marital argument‚ the harder it is on your immune system.
Researchers at Cambridge University in England found that couples who had constant quarrels were 13 times as likely to develop a serious illness as couples who rarely fought.
A study of students at Yale University discovered that roommates who disliked each other had far more colds and flues and visits to physicians than did roommates who liked each other – and the greater the dislike – the higher the number of illnesses.
"A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." Proverbs 18:20‚ 21
"Pleasant words are as an honeycomb‚ sweet to the soul‚ and health to the bones." Proverbs 16:24
"For the ear trieth words‚ as the mouth tasteth meat." Job 34:3

Posted - 11/02/2007 : 09:14:59 When Dr. Sarno was told that I was raised in a strict religious household, he commented I would indeed have internal rage about it. We talked at length and noted things about which I'd likely need to journal. I did a lot of writing and have come to terms with: my parents thought they were doing the right thing at the time, and I forgive them for giving us no choice but to be part of that religion or move out! <--yes, that required writing for sure! They both have apologized for the "rules" that were imposed on my brother and I growing up. BUT yes, if you are raised religiously, you likely will have anger about it. Even if you don't realize it yet. . . 2scoops--thanks for the article! -Lori |

Posted - 11/01/2007 : 12:10:30 Kelvin, didn't write it, I'll post the link of where I got it. It goes into nutrion as well as other remedies for our total health.

I wouldn't worry about Sarno. You don'tknow what Sarno's beliefs are as far as God. All we know is that he made an observation of seeing people who had phsycological issues, and these issues have created physical symptoms. As we know this is true, and we need to focus on the real issue. The important thing is to surround ourselves with people who can help us, who listen to us,and who will give sound advice. There's so many lies out there, and many people out there who just want to sell us something. People make millions off of our suffering, and they don't want to let that money go. I don't believe Sarno is that way, and I believe he wants to help others, as he has seen a lot of suffering.
There's more out there than TMS. Look at our world today, we are injecting little babies with harmful toxins and chemicals at birth. Autism is growing, along with other childhood diseases. Jenny McCarthy came forward with her story of healing with her son. We all need adequate nutrition, air, water, exercise, love, etc. I think it's all about teaching TRUTH, and it should be aout health, and not money. |

Posted - 11/01/2007 : 11:55:01 Electra, I totally understand where your coming from, I was the same way. It's like some people in the church expect little kids to be grown adults. I know I sure did, and was guilt and shame based when I felt I was letting others down. I look back and everyone else in my youth group is out of church, the girls all had kids before wedlock, etc. So, all that finger pointing absolutely did no good. One book oyu may want to checkout is Healing the Shame That Binds You, by John Bradshaw.
Solomon, even stated, as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. I think a lot of people in the church are shame based, and aren't really taught love and forgiveness. I know I've seen it in my life. The bible says we are to love, and to be gentle spirited, hat's TRUTH. We are supposed to seek it with all our heart, and not rely on everything man says. I can see why a lot of TMS exists in the church, it's because we aren't getting the truth, it's the religion that gets us. In James, it says confess your faults to one another, that you maybe healed. Well, I see TMS as confessing our faults. I think that's why when we start to do so, the pain may subside. It's about being honest. I think some people's symptoms last, because they are afraid to confess, and they act as though everything is ok. They fear the judgement from their fellow peers. We nshould not fear judgement, we should be allowed to confess our faults with one anoter.
Another thing I wanted to mention was Jesus. He was a teacher, He didn't start His ministry until He was 30. I believe he had to go through a lot of learning and life experiences before He was ready. It's so hard to be a little kid, teenager and expected to be perfect. |

Mike,
I fully understand what you mean. But, don't let one bad apple ruin an opportunity for you to experience what God intended for the church to be. While your experience may be common, there are many other churches (yes, even some Southern Baptists) where children are loved and hearts are healed. I know because I am a member of one of them.

Posted - 11/01/2007 : 11:03:07 Matt,
Excellent post! If you don't mind me asking - did you write all this yourself or find it somewhere?
And, another question for you: as someone who obviously has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ – did you have any struggle accepting a psychological explanation for pain from a doctor (Dr. Sarno) who makes no reference to God or the Bible in his books?
The reason I ask is because that has perplexed me for over a year and a half. While nothing that Dr. Sarno says pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of TMS contradicts Scripture (in fact, your posting give several references that shows the validity of how this truth is represented throughout the Scripture), the fact that I had to learn about this from a non-Christian has caused me some concern.
I have read Dr. Brady’s book and he clearly deals with the spiritual aspect – but as far as TMS goes he learned all that from Dr. Sarno as well.
Just curious, Kelvin

Posted - 11/01/2007 : 10:33:13 I grew up in a household with parents who were very strict and very disciplinarian. They were Southern Baptist and very, very religious. It seems I spent most of my time as a child in church. Every time I turned around I was sitting in church listening to a preacher screaming at me about how bad a sinner I was and if I don't do this or that I was going to spend eternal damnation burning in hell. To a youngster this was very enraging to me because I knew I was not a bad person. It filled me with fear because I didn't want to go to hell. I would have much rather have been out playing baseball or football with my friends who were not being forced to sit still for hours at a time two or three times a week listening to a preacher shouting at me and try to scare me to death.
When I got old enough to leave home I quit going to church. I still consider myself a Christian. I still read the Bible and pray but I have come to realize that organized religion is one of the biggest reasons I have TMS. |
