new to this forum. wondering how long people wait to throw themselves back into physical activity. my job is to be physical. i am a classically trained dancer. have been suffering from a bad low back attack now for 1 week. saw Dr. Sarno and totally believe in his findings. been reading and reading and reading and writing and writing and no improvement. im tempted to just throw myself back into physical activity even though sarno says that is a no no right away because u have to approach it from a psychological perspective...any info....i feel desperate. thanx |

Posted - 09/12/2007 : 08:45:14 Unfortunately, there is no set time. I've heard stories of people reading the book and being cured in days. They are rare. I've been a student of TMS for about 9 years since I used Sarno's methods to get past 3 years of pain. It took about 2 weeks for significant improvement. But I still had nagging pains from time to time for another month or two.
My latest TMS episode - I was back and mobile in about 10 days, but it's taken a solid two months to not have any pain during normal activities.
A lot of it depends on the emotional issues that brought about the TMS pain in the first place. The worse the emotional issues are, the longer it may take.
As mentioned above, there is comfort in resuming physical activity and realizing that you didn't break yourself. While you may hurt during and sometime afterwards - it will give you confidence that you can beat this thing called TMS. Go for it!
Lastly, If you put a timetable on it and expect to be 100% by a certain date - you will just frustrate yourself and slow down the process. Just keep doing the emotional work, reading, journaling. I know how aggravating it is knowing I had TMS but still being in pain. ...all while waiting for the results. Be patient - they will come.

Posted - 09/12/2007 : 01:29:02 Well, everyone is different, and you may need time, but personally i would throw myself back into activity. This is a psychological approach because you are challenging your psyche's ruse. When i overcame severe sciatica 10 yrs ago, the first thing i did was resume weightlifting (strenuous back exercises) and running. Both were very painful at first, but when i realized i wasn't crippling myself by doing things that were supposed to cripple me, i gained faith in the diagnoses, and the pain gradually dissapeared. I guess i would say if you are strong enough psychologically to challenge the pain, then you are certainly strong enough physically. |

Posted - 09/11/2007 : 15:51:42 perhaps your dancing was your major stress relief. Without it at the moment, the stress is piling up.
To us TMS'rs your back went out because your threshold of rage has been built up and can no longer be distracted w/ just dancing. The brain has decided you needed a physical distraction.
Now your'e totally fustrated because conciously you believe but the unconcious sees this as too convienent.
Any tips? I would try to accept that rtng to dancing will be slow, however,........certain.
patience, persistence! |

Posted - 09/11/2007 : 12:33:58 If you saw Dr Sarno and he advised to wait then I'd follow his advice. Going back too soon before you've reconditioned your mind can be counterproductive.
Be patient!
