Posted - 11/17/2004 : 09:20:36 First, I like to say I am a devout Sarno believer. My life has been transformed thanks to him. Many years have gone by and 2 years ago I banged my middle toe SO bad it just didn't seem to get better. Saw podiatrists etc. and then about 6 months later my pinky toes started to really bother me. Couldn't wear shoes etc. My husband kept saying it must be TMS! So during that time I tried to just ignor it but it wouldn't go away. I recently started phyical therepy and pain management and was diagnosed with RSD also known as CRPS. I called Dr. Sarno and of course he yelled at me! I cancelled my future therpy appts. but here is the thing:I had a sympathetic nerve block done a week and a half ago without any success at all. I was told it takes a few to work. The second one (just before Sarno called me back)really helped ALOT.(these are not cortizone shots). I am scheduled to take another next week. I know it goes against the theory but it really worked. It is suppose to break the pain signal chain going from the brain to the toes, like "rebooting" a computer I am told. Kinda sounds like a mechanical way to stop this TMS pain process. Anyway It REALLY helped so far! Phyical Therepy of course was a complete waste. Can I get these nerve blocks and still be following the Sarno theory? I have my appt.to see Dr. Sarno again (after 10 years) now on Dec.7th. COMMENTS APPRECIATED. |

Posted - 03/01/2005 : 12:32:09 colleen,
did you read all my posts? I think they are easy to get if you click on my name. They explain my whole story including the history of my situation regarding the death of my mother etc. My problem in my toes, it still is here but I just work around it. Try to read all my posts if you can for the total picture. The feet are a common TMS site! Holly |

Posted - 02/28/2005 : 17:24:02 Holly, I read some of your post about your feet, as you requested and nerve block. Please give me a little more info on when your feet problems started and on nerve block. I know what you are saying about using something to calm the pain.....nerve pain is AWEFUL and it does make you want to reach out to whatever will quiet the pain fast. I am just learning about TMS so I have a long way to go. Thank You for contacting me. I am interested in hearing your story. I just contacted Dr. Sarno by letter as I live just outside of NY,NJ or CONN area of which he accepts patients. I have been reading his book. I have seen a lot of Doctors including a Neurologist, Podiatrist, Orthopedic, Pain Management Specialist..... Colleen

Posted - 11/18/2004 : 10:56:27 Dear Holly,
The nerve blocks are a form of PHYSICAL treatment. You are treating the symptom rather than the cause. TMS theory, which is what we're all here for, is about training the mind, to deal with physical pain caused by the mind, to the body.
If, you give someone a fish, you have fed them for a day, if you teach them to fish, you have fed them for life. If, you eliminate a TMS pain, with a physcial band-aid, you've "fixed" it for a day-if you can master TMS thinking, then you can lessen all pain for life. |

Posted - 11/18/2004 : 08:43:17 Let me elaborate. If you get lasting relief from sympathetic nerve block, it is most likely due to the placebo effect.
Mala, you are right in that a sympathetic nerve block is really just an anaesthetic. So it is simply a pain killer.
But the anaesthetic wears off; the procedure is not designed for long-term pain relief. It is really a diagnostic test. In the context of TMS, the diagnosis is irrelevant.
If the block is successful, doctors will say that the sympathetic nerves are the "source" of the pain. TMS theory says that the sympathetic nerves are the "target" of the pain, i.e. the brain has decided to reduce blood flow to those nerves to produce symptoms.
Personally I would never voluntarily have anything injected into my spine, but that's me. |

Posted - 11/17/2004 : 19:22:40 This is where people's opinions will differ. Dave said it in a word 'placebo'. Me, well I think how is it different from Sarno saying 'take strong painkillers'? Both are the same really. Best to ask the doctor when you see him since your belief in what HE says will be the deciding factor in this argument. Thing is you'll never really know now since you've gone ahead with the injections. If you get permanent relief will it be from the injections or thinking the tms way?
Either way,I hope you stay pain free.
Good Luck & Good Health Mala |
