Posted - 06/12/2007 : 14:11:12 Needing to know if everyone (anyone?) feels like I'm on the right track. It seems to me, according to Sarno - and this is my interpretation - that when we start life, there is an invisible receptacle that we carry with us. In this bag goes all of our hurts, embarrasments, guilt and humiliations. Depending on how full the bag gets and when this fullness occurs, there comes a time that no more can fit in. This is when our body "presents its bill" so to speak, because the Emotional Bag is full and all of these things now must land in the body in the form of pain. So we are to begin to reflect (journal) and become aware of this process. Acquiring this knowledge (power) is mostly all that is needed to banish the physical pain, in time. Is this it? If I continue with this knowledge and do my work, can I look forward to a better life? I sort of think of it as a "recovering" alcoholic. One is never finished with this work or process but must continue to know oneself to break out of the chains of TMS. I guess I just need a little encouragement, to know I am on the right path. Is there anything else that anyone has to offer me while I travel this road? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Even if there are none and you think I'm gettin' it, please tell me!

Posted - 06/13/2007 : 05:21:29 I agree, I never thought jornaling would help but the more I write the more I remember and sometimes its even hard to write about it let alone remember it. Also just being truthful and honest about how I really felt about things helps. I'm surprised to find how much resentment, anger at others and myself I have really stored up.

Yes, yes, and yes ... you are.
Did you see this quote a couple weeks ago?
from Alice Walker's wonderful book _The Drama of the Gifted Child_
The truth about childhood is stored up in our bodies and lives in the depths of our souls. Our intellect can be deceived, our feelings can be numbed and manipulated, our perceptions shamed and confused, our bodies tricked with medication, but our soul never forgets. And because we are one, one whole soul in one body, someday our body will present its bill. The wounded and lost child is only in hiding; the soul is still whole in spirit. Ultimately, our deepest self will accept no compromises or excuses, and it will not stop tormenting or contaminating us until we stop evading the truth.

Posted - 06/12/2007 : 19:36:44 Read the psychology sections of Dr. Sarno's books again. It is all there in a nutshell
******* Sarno-ize it! Read chapter 4 of Dr. Sarno's "The Divided Mind." It's all you need to know in order to recover. |

Posted - 06/12/2007 : 18:32:23 sounds alot more like Brady's theory..AOS instead of TMS..autotomic overload syndrome. He says just get it out and neutralize the emotions. No real mention of "distraction" however. |

Posted - 06/12/2007 : 16:52:39 You got most of it, except one part that is key to Dr. Sarno's theory:
When the emotions fill the bag, they do not enter the body as pain. Instead, the subconscious (unconscious for those who prefer) recognizes the bag is full and does not want to consciousness part of you to see all the garbage which has collected in the bag. Instead of telling the consciousness to empty the bag and take the garbage out for collection (Monday, Wednesday and Friday in my town...lol...), the subconscious creates a distraction in the form of pain so the conscious does not see the full bag. The bag continues to fill and overflow, which necessitates a constant and sometimes progressive distraction. This is TMS. Cure? Look at the bag...
