Posted - 06/07/2007 : 14:39:34 Has anyone listened to Eckhart Tolle's "In the Presence of a Great Mystery" cds? I have a silent meditation group and we listened to it this week and we got to the third CD where he talks about "painbody" and the collective manifestation of pain thoughts in our unconscious. I thought it was really profound and very helpful in context of TMS theory. I strongly recommend ET's works anyway, as he helps people to connect to presence, but when I heard how he expressed painbody I thought "WOW!" I've got to share this with my buddies on the forum.

what book would be the best one by ET to start with?
Hi Shortcake, He doesn't have many books, but does have a lot of audio programs. If you want a book, I really adore his latest: The New Earth. It's beautiful. I have been reading it for years, and still have not finished it. The thing about his works is you can jump in anywhere and pick up anywhere ... there's no rush or pressure to get to the next page to figure things out.
If it's audio you are after, I have a few suggestions. First of all, he is unlike any "presenter" I have ever experienced. There is as much power in his pauses as found in his words. The first time I listened to him, I felt a bit uncomfy ... but now, his style (for lack of better word) really serves me. If you do listen to him, be patient. The Findhorn Retreat is a wonderful program. He has it available on DVD (I haven't watched him yet) but the DVDs come wtih a beautiful little picture book of photos ET took. They are delightful. I just finished listening to In the Presence of Great Mystery and so far, of all the audio programs, this one hit home the most on the painbody ... but that was just my experience: I may have not been listening with painbody relevancy to all the other programs. >|< Penny
Disclaimer: These suggestions are NOT a replacement for TMS work. If you are interested in creating presence and centeredness in your life, Eckhart's works may lead you to this place. I wanted to say this before anyone jumps on me. Is it me, or is the board a little extra meow-y lately?! (Double disclaimer ... no offense to kitties or cat owners ) |

Posted - 06/08/2007 : 19:29:00 Eckhart Tolle's work has been a gift for me - the day to day tension of work, life etc. has much less of an effect/reaction than before. The "painbody" is a real entity, feeding the ego, and itself. |

Healing111 is right, many other practitioners work in areas that seem less directly relevant to TMS, but I think that those people can help us when we are further on and working with emotions primarily.

I couldn't agree more. I bought The Power Of Now the day it was released and since then have probably read, listened to or watched almost everything Eckhart has ever done.
I think there are HUGE parallels between Eckhart's "painbody" theory and Dr. Sarno (and other's) "subconcious". They may even be interchangeable. Eckhart talks about how the painbody stays "hidden" from concsious awareness and how it can affect our emotions, relationships and physical bodies, all the while "feeding" on the negativity it creates. It will CREATE negative thoughts, emotions, physical symptoms and conflicts with others to keep "us" (who we truly are) unaware. Sounds a lot like what happens in TMS... a whole "diversion" tactic. Also similar to TMS, Eckhart says that the whole "trick" is to become AWARE of the painbody..... and if you do so, you "rob" it of it's ability to create the negativity. And once you are aware, you in effect "starve" it to death and "transmute" it through the power of your Awareness. The only way it can keep functioning is to stay below our conscious awareness. Much like TMS, once you become AWARE of what is going on below your conscious awareness... it's "game over".
So, I think there is a lot to be learned from Eckhart about ways to deal more effectively with TMS. I've heard people on the forum mention Pema Chodron (I love her and think she's fantastic!!!), but I think Eckhart seems to fit much better with "TMS theory" than Pema. (just my opinion)
For people who don't have access to Eckhart's audio or video releases, your local library may have a copy of his newest book "A New Earth". He speaks quite a bit about the painbody in that book.
Anyway, great post Penny! Thank you. |
