Also, even if stressful times/awful events (like the death of family members) have passed, any repressed emotions they have created are still in the reservoir. You may need to revisit those times and think about some emotions you might have repressed (particularly anger as it is the main culprit in most TMS).

Hi Davec,

Many of your issues parallel mine. My family issues are behind me, for a while at least, but dealing with a government and it's bureauracy, that I feel intentionaly, (or not), creates TMS for it's citiizens perhaps as a distraction from it's nefarious and greedy political purposes, effects me on a daily basis in my business.

This fact has made me think about those who feel such issues are not fair game at this board for discusssion, and should be taken elsewhere.

Well those are the issues that are a big part of my TMS reservoir filling dymanic, and, some others here too. Why is it less valid to discuss, debate, argue passionately OUR TMS creating issues?...versus, discussions that are deemed supportive, therfore good-[ist]? Maybe me and Shawn and Art need to rankle as much as you ladies and gentlemen need to exhibit support.

If anything, for a group as a whole, whose problems originate with repressed and suppressed rage, it may be a good thing to practice argumentation or open arguing from the relative physical safety of a TV screen.

As they say at other boards, just my $2.22; (2 cents adjusted for inflation).

Yes, I have lots of thoughts on your posting, and you fit the TMS profile as outlined by Dr. Sarno.

First of all the demands of your job are a source of stress and inner rage as well as the demands you place on yourself. You find yourself in a situation that you cannot get out of and tasks are placed upon you that you simply loathe, yet you are forced to remain silent. Again, this is enraging. Does this remind you of anything in your childhood or adolescent past? Did you ever think of changing careers into something less stressful and provides you with more fulfillment?

Second, did you have issues with your father that went unresolved and now feel angry or sad about the inability to go back and visit those issues? Were your parents strict and demanding in anyway?

Thirdly, having to take care of aging parents is a big one for TMSers as you are expected to be the goodist child and it would be shameful and embarrassing to protest. Ypu are forced to repress those emotions and do your duty.

Finally, you are a self described perfectionist. You might want to ask yourself why this is so, and what are the origins of this personality trait. Are you sensitive to criticism? Try taking this online test and see what you find: http://discoveryhealth.queendom.com/perfectionism_abridged_access.html
Think about the questions more deeply in your journaling times.

Try to dig a little deeper into all of these issues and go beyond the surface emotions. Dig into the past if necessary. I suggest you journal on the four issues listed above on separate days and write down everything you can think of. Then on the fifth day go back and read what you have written and see if you can think of anything new that may be the source of your rage.

I leave you with this quote from Dr. Selfridge:

"Our goal in these [journaling] sessions is not to reconstruct anger provoking incidents in minute detail or to magnify them. Instead, it is to help you prove two things to yourself: that you are confident that the biochemicals of emotion have been causing your symptoms, and that you are insistently restricting your thinking to the emotions themselves instead of their physical effect on your body. You are creating and honing a new habit, a new way of relating to your symptoms. You are changing your brain chemistry to get better."

In reply to whats going on that are issues, in addition to a pretty demanding job (i am a deputy in a school and as a consequence have issues everyday centred around difficult children and increasingly more difficult parents,a boss who does a considerable amount of delegation,a government who have lost sight of the purpose of education(we are all target lead now)i would say that since the start of my burning and aching 3 years ago that i have become very
frustrated with myself as i have gone from being a daily cyclist, runner and generally very fit ex international sportsman to someone who is so scared of the consequences of trying to train (I still do something most days but can't sit a saddle or run)that it dominates alot of my thinking ,like when is this going to stop and how much worse is this going to get. Also the involvement i have had with the medical establishment over the last 3 years has been incredibly frustrating as i had the feeling no one was listening.
Otherwise i did go through a very tough emotional period 2 years ago with my father dying and my brother ,who is /was an alcoholic going right off the rails and me being the older son feeling totally responsible for my mother but thats over now.
I am definetly a perfectionist, not in the tidy sense but have very high expectations of staff and am seen and the upholder of our standards but i always felt i dealt well with balancing life and work.
I had an okay childhood and no real problems but have always had to work hard to achieve, there were better natural athletes than me but i applied myself better type of thing.
Sorry about the rambling but i'm trying to give you am idea of my issues in context.Any thoughts?

Davec

I thank you for your responce but you still did not really tell us about yourself and what kind of pressure you are under. You told us a lot about your symptoms, but little about yourself. We cannot help you with your symptoms, but we may be able to offer insights into your personal dilemma if you open up a bit. Share with us so we can learn together.

I was posting while you were answering, so, hurry-up and get all the tests you need to see if there is anything, legitimately structurtal, causing your symptoms. The first thing Dr. Sarno would do is look at your tests and give you a physical exam. Most things are TMS but SOME are NOT. Eliminate the legitimate first to ease your mind that it is TMS.

It's a fundamental of TMS thinking, that as long as you have lingering doubts that your symptoms may be legitimate, you won't progress very far. So take the tests and eliminate the legit.

Itching and scratching somewhat compulsively, probably is a form of TMS distraction. When your mind is sick of thinking about what's going on in your life emotionaly, the unconscious provides a protective TMS psychosomatic symptom, for a little (or a lot of relief, depending on your individual needs).

You can enjoy the little relief and realize it's a mild form of TMS distraction and then switch your mind back to thinking TMS/psychologicaly and dealing head-on with your REAL problems, like how do I find a girlfriend--or how do I lose my girlfriend, or why am I so poor...or how do I invest all this money I have and not have to pay so much in taxes.

If your itching and scratching gets to a point excessiveness, like you start doing physical damage, like bleeding, then take it more seriously and read more Sarno or get some Sarno style therapy. Taken to the extreme, there are people who self-mutilate and cut themselves or literaly pull out all their hair. This would be a more accute form of psychosomatic TMS behavior.

Basically i am struggling on a number of issues.
1. despite having some immediate success after reading about TMS i am now back to the same situation with the pain only its worse.
2 doubt about whether something this permanently painful isn't just psychological.
3 journalling daily but struggling to feel/
express,describe how i feel!which causes more tension.
4 probably reading too much,i've read Sarno,Selfridge,Amir,Monte H,and Sopher in my search for an answer.I ve probably overcomplicated the process.
5 having an amazing 3 weeks at Xmas after just finding out about TMS when i actually got running again and stopped 2 years of meds(i'm still staying away from those)
6 still not knowing whether i have peripheral neuropathy though i have an appointment with a top specialist next month having waited a year!
7 getting more an more afraid of these symptoms--i am normally very down the line but some of this burning is pretty scary!

I am more interested in your pyschological state. What is taking place in your life right now that you suspect may be bringing on these symptoms?
