Somehow I suspect my constant itchy scalp and dandruff are stress/tms related too.

People agree? People had success getting rid of it using Sarno's ideas? I'd greatly appreciate any input.

Many people on this message board will report on one symptom or another and ask whether other board members consider it to be a manifestation of TMS. Here is what Dr. Sarno says in chapter 7, page 147, in "Healing Back Pain" under the subtitle: "The Emotions and More Serious Disorders." Please try to keep these words in mind when experiencing new symptoms. I highly recommend you read the whole chapter, and especially that section:

"There are those in medicine who believe that emotions play a role in all aspects of health and illness. I am one of them. [Franz] Alexander suggested doing away with the term psychosomatic medicine since it was redundant - everything medical is influenced in some way be the emotions. I believe that all medical studies are flawed if they do not consider the emotional factor. For example, a research project dealing with the hardening of the arteries usually includes consideration of diet (cholesterol), weight, exercise, genetic factors - but if it does not include emotional factors, the results, in my view are not valid."

Sarno-ize it!
Read chapter 4 of Dr. Sarno's "The Divided Mind." It's all you need to know in order to recover.

I know this is an old topic but it just clicked with me. Through my life I have suffered from a very itchy scalp now and again. I have Psoriasis which never itches but my Doc linked it to that. I have only just realised that when I forget about my scalp it doesn't itch and clears up. It tends to come back at stressful times or when I have been scratching my head in the night. I have tried many shampoos with no success. I can't believe it, I am scratching my head now!

I get this same process with the inside of my ears.

I had pretty bad dandruff on one patch of my head for about five years during the same time I dealt with other TMS equivalents (RSI & depression mainly). It took longer to go away than the pain. I did some "Don't scratch this, it only itches because of TMS" thinking, but in the end I just had to try to ignore it. Eventually it went away. I did also change to a milder shampoo without irritating ingredients, but I don't get it even when I use other shampoos now. So yes! It can happen.

Shary, let's do it!

Sky, I've had various skin problems most of my life, including oily, itchy, dandruffy scalp. Over the years I've been to dozens of dermatologists, who all chalked it up to heredity and prescribed topical medication and/or some sort of regimen that only partially worked. I'm quite sure, now, that these skin problems are a TMS equivalent. I think they will eventually disappear, right along with my muscle pain.

I think there's a definite link between stress and dandruff, just as there is with many skin disorders...That said, I'd prolly just go out and get a good dandruff shampoo while working on my stress levels...
