For as long as I can remember I have been the opposite of an early-riser. I'd often sleep 10-12 hours and still wake up feeling low on energy. Until recently I was tempted to call these sleep disturbance symptoms part of TMS - ie. psychologically based.

A couple of weeks back though I did a detox fast for ten days, known as the Master Cleanser (google that if you like), where you only drink home-made lemonade for the full ten days. It's a great boost for the body, and always restores my lost appetite and sluggishness after the festive season, with all it's heavy and rich food.

Afterward I found my body was asking for salads and raw food mostly. I no longer had any interest in pizza and hamburgers, which is what I was craving before. I have to stress, this is something that just seemed to happen naturally. There was no willpower involved. That's just what I seemed to want to only eat.

After about 2-3 weeks now of eating a 90% vegetarian diet, with perhaps 50% of that being raw foods, I've noticed drastic changes in my sleep patterns.

Instead of sleeping through to midday and having no energy to get up, I'm naturally waking at between 8 and 9am without an alarm clock, and feeling refreshed! It's amazing!! I should stress the alarm clock bit, because if you knew me before you wouldn't believe how difficult it was to get me out of bed - let alone at that time in the morning!

I guess I just wanted to make the point that not everything is "psychological". Sometimes there is a very real physical component, and actually in my new perception of how TMS works, I see body and mind as a continuum, rather than separate entities affecting each other.

For me it appears a diet rich in meat, processed foods and dairy was at the root of my poor sleep and low energy. I think the meat is probably the key here, because I'd given the other two up independently before and not had these benefits. I love meat (roast lamb... mmmm!!) but now I have to admit to myself that it appears it was poisoning me slowly.

Just thought I'd share and encourage anyone out there with the same symptoms as I'd had to certainly give a fast and a subsequent natural diet change a shot.

Cheers,
greg

Hi Floorten,
I agree that not everything is psychological. For some of us, that may be too simplistic an approach. TMS may be the underlying cause, but it can create physical problems that can cause problems of their own--like allergies, for instance, as Sarno mentions in Healing Back Pain.

Regarding diet, I tried a 3-day liquid fast once and it made me feel crappy. What works for some people doesn't work for others, so I think you just have to experiment a little. I seem to do best on a low-glycemic mostly vegetarian diet with small amounts of meat or fish. A totally veggie diet makes me weak and sluggish. On the other hand, too much protein binds me up and makes me feel like a beached whale. I do drink a lot of water.

Here's an interesting idea. My aunt suggested Gatorade. The theory is that it's known to help headaches, so maybe painful, oxygen deprived muscles are also deprived of electrolytes. Maybe this idea is a stretch, but what the heck. It's worth a try.

If you had a physical problem I would guess it could have been the lack of fluids. Drink a minimum of one gallon a day. Make most of that water. Without the adequate amount of fluids, your body will have a hard time digest anything. That lack of fluids will make you feel fatigued.

Keep eating those raw veggies and fruits. They are full of nutrients and WATER!

Anyways, I'm happy your doing better.

Yes, very good point about the water. I'm sure that was a large factor too. I'm now drinking about a gallon a day, like you say. God knows, it means I'm always dashing to the toilet, but small price to pay for health!

That's one thing about doing a liquid fast - it accustoms you to drinking lots of fluids each day.

I drink lots of "blue solar water" (google that if youre curious!) because i like the idea of it. No idea if it actually has any more health benefits than straight from the tap, but who cares, placebos can work too!

Hi Floorten,
Glad you are feeling refreshed and energized after the fast..The Master Cleanse is wonderful for the body..I did it once years ago..I have fasted several times in my life and always have a similiar experience that you described..For me, there is also a spiritual element, an awakening, if you will..I feel closer to God and it's wonderful! You have made me feel like doing another fast soon..After my dog is all better, I may do a juice fast,,all veggie, fresh squeezed for 3 or 5 days..I agree with you that although many things are psychological in origin, ie..TMS sure is..Eating right, exercising, taking care of our body/temple is very important as well..And..many of our ailments can be fixed just by treated our bodies right and feeding it what it truly needs..
Hugs and God bless,
Karen

I have done an shortened cleansing program because I was diagnosed with a blocked sigmoid colin. My doctor at first thought it was a fibroid. That worried me a bit. Thankfully an ultra sound discounted that idea. I did a brief regimine. I know that I felt more clean and clear while I was taking this care of myself and watching my diet closely. Digestive health seems primary.

From what I understand in a cursory way is that if you body can't absorb the nutrients it needs in our digestive system and gets loaded down by a process that isn't working efficiently we feel all sorts of consequences. We're obviously supposed to get our sustaining energy from food. Good fuel in good energy out! I was nearly a vegatarian for a couple of years. I remember feeling very good but I also ate things that I felt my body needed at particular times.

I am small and if I don't eat or skip a meal or eat late, I mentally lose it and go into a fog. Maybe some people will say it's TMS. Those a some physical symptoms that I simply must listen to! I guess some could argue that it is "conditioning". If I am dealing with the same issues using a TMS approach at one time with a healthy diet then another when I am eating poorly doesn't that point clearly to the fact that diet has a major effect if I feel greatly improved? I'm kind of blabbering becaues I missed a good lunch!! Off to the kitchen.
