Hi all,

To make a long story short, I just noticed a few days ago that I am starting to develope varicose veins in my left leg (I've probably had them for some time actually). I'm a 40 year old guy and thought that I was in pretty good shape. I had always thought varicose veins usually happened to woman or much older people. I've read that they are for the most part asymptomatic and usually just an eye sore. However, reading about venuous insufficiency, ulcers, etc....it started to bother me. As usual, I started to obsess and and get into a bit of a panic about this. I found myself constantly elevating my leg since that is supposed to help. However, I hate the idea that I have to "treat" these things.

Now, to add insult to injury, wouldn't you know that within three days of being "concerned" about these varicose veins, I've now developed what appears to be an Excema rash right smack dab on top of them (on my shin). I immediately freaked and worried some more. I've never had excema before and can only assume because of the "timing" that my brain must have TMS'd my shin with this rash.

I assume, that since varicose veins do not disappear on their own, that they are not a TMS equivalent. However, I'm tired of this TMS stuff constantly bombarding me. I'm concurently dealing with knee pain on my other leg and I don't need this added crap.

Anybody have varicose veins that would like to chime in with some words of encouragement? I've heard that the condition is progressive, so if and when is it advisable to get surgery on these intruders? Can you get by with them?

Thanks,

Inferno

I agree that you might be making matters worse by stewing about it. Most people get a least a few varicose veins as they get older, but they usually don't hurt. I have one in my left forearm, of all places, that sometimes aches a little. I think it's pinched vasculature caused by my frozen shoulder. I don't think I have eczema, but I get itchy spots around my waist. Scratching makes it worse. Usually there's no apparent cause for it. A couple of years ago I did develop a rash across the backs of my hands and on various places on my torso. The doc gave me some ointment and said to quit wearing anything made with Latex, which is apparently a common offender. I did and and the rash went away but I still have these other itchy areas. Like all the rest of my TMS symptoms, they move around from one place to another.

Hi Inferno,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss, I cannot even imagine the grieving and pain of losing one's doggie child..Thank you so much for wishing healing for my poochie..The poor boy pulled out his cathater IV's 5 times yesterday and managed to remove his own halo/lampshade protection..So now they had to strap it around his waist..I think he is just sick and tired of being poked w/ needles, etc..for the last 9 days & wants to come home to us..The doctor today said he was doing a bit better and held down a little water..He's being given a shot of anti nausea medication along w/ very strong pain meds..Pancreatitis is extremely painful..We are hoping/praying he can come home Tuesday..If he holds down water..and then a little food..

It's driving me nuts cuz I cannot visit him today..They don't have doctors there today, they are just on call..It's the nurses 24/7, which is good but they are so busy visitors aren't allowed on Sunday..I miss him so much, we all do..It's all i can think of..

I read that apple cider vinegar, btw, a tablespoon of the good stuff from a health store (Braggs brand) in water is good for varicose veins..Try not to worry too much..
Hugs and God bless,
Karen

Thank you all for your response. I hate to sound like a cry baby, but these veins just seemed to heap it on to my other problems. I guess it just signifies another step in growing older. Anybody else have any thoughts?

By the way, sorry about your dog Singer Artist. I lost my Chauncey, my beloved Yorkshire terrier 2 months ago. He suddenly came down sick, and two days later he was gone. I hope that your dog pulls through OK. I have since got another dog, although he will never replace Chauncey, he has taken some of the pain away.

Thanks,

Inferno.

Hi Inferno,
I understand how you feel..Us TMSers get so scared when something new (or old) hurts or something appears out of the ordinary on our bodies..Let me speak for myself here..alot of the time I scan my body, check on my moles etc..I saw a vein in my right leg under my previously injured knee and it is more prominent..Right away I get worried it's turning varicose and then something worse..My mind frequently takes things to the extreme possibilities..the whole hypochodriacal way of thinking..IT is very painful and I feel for you..

I have seen people with severe varicose veins, elderly men and women working out w/ weights heavier then I can lift and smiling and looking happy and healthy..Try not to focus and worry..(easier said then done)..

Lastly, when someone you love dearly is very sick (ie..my doggie) it puts things into another perspective altogether..(for me, anyway..) All i can think of is wanting my doggie to come home, healed from the hospital and get off those darn IV's..I haven't scanned my body much at all since he has been sick..
Hope something I said helps,
Karen

Hi Inferno,

I am 57 yo and have had varicose veins on the inside of my right thigh (just above the knee) for several years. They give me no pain or discomfort in any way. My suggestion at this point would be to not be overly concerned about them. Maybe you can relate to my story below.

Now, how this relates to TMS. I had lower-back and sciatica pain in my right leg for about 7 mos. I tried chiropractic, physical therapy, special back exercises, walking, not walking, etc, etc, and nothing helped. In fact it was getting progressively worse the more I tried to "fix" it. And, during that time I could swear that the varicose veins in my right leg were getting worse too! I felt like I was falling apart, was depressed and desperate and had recently lost a dear friend I had been a caregiver for. I couldn't have been much lower psychologically and emotionally and simply exhausted in general. Fortunately I stumbled across Dr. Sarno and his TMS books about this time. Once I REALLY accepted that my condition was TMS and stopped trying to "fix" myself physically, the pain quickly began to lessen and within a week or so all of the back and sciatica pain was virtually gone. I've been totally pain free for a couple of months now. AND, the varicose veins look no worse than prior to that TMS bout!

Hope this is some encouragement for you.

Inferno,
I work in a hospital and noticed that some of the older female staff (when female staff wore dresses) had varicose veins. After reading TMS I wondered why only some got them and if it was due to them not being happy in their work, maybe they had to work to keep the wolf from the door and their suppressed anger at this scenario caused the veins? It did seem that the less cheerful types developed the veins.

It sounds like your brain, discovering that varicose veins are a major distraction for you, decided to make a really thorough job of it and stuck the eczema on top.

I have many minor TMS complaints that come and go, annoying but liveable with.

Anne
