Posted - 04/16/2007 : 14:00:26 I have "cured" sciatica before about 4 years ago with reading Mind over Back Pain. Now, however, I am struggling with the idea of a structural cause for my shoulder/arm pain. I fell two months ago. I ignored the symptoms for a month, but then I made the mistake of going to the chiropractor who said a rib was out of place and after three treatments said the rib was fine. However, the pain was worse. My back gets sore and it feels like everything is stiff and when I move my arm sometimes I get a sharp nerve type pain. I also get some aching in my arm. I think that because I gave into the idea of a structural cause, the pain is worse because I am in full blown TMS. Any one out there have any advice to help in refuting the structural diagnoses? Any advice on how to go from here? I am frustrated and frightened of going through the pain again. Renee |

Posted - 04/17/2007 : 09:28:04 I agree with Dave. The pain is worse because you're scaring yourself into thinking you're falling apart. This is adding yet another stressor to what you're already dealing with. First rule out actual injuries, then operate on the assumption that the culprit is TMS. |

Posted - 04/17/2007 : 08:32:55 If you learn anything from Dr. Sarno it is that you should never go to a chiropractor.
It is easy to fall back into thinking structurally when there are new issues in your life that are leading to repressed rage.
If you had an injury you should rule out a fracture. If you told your chiropractor that the symptoms began after a fall and he still adjusted you without sending you to a MD or at least getting X-Rays then he is a quack (as some chiropractors tend to be). |

Posted - 04/17/2007 : 04:49:13 Go to a "real" Doctor and get checked. You may have a cracked rib or pulled something. Getting a real diagnosis will put your mind at ease and allow you to go ahead with confidence. Paul. |

Posted - 04/16/2007 : 19:24:00 Yes, I think we all tend to under estimate the impact of daily stressors even though Dr. Sarno lists them as a major source of TMS.....

Posted - 04/16/2007 : 16:19:09 I am under a tremendous amount of stress at my job with a new boss and the potential that my job my be cut to part time. Add to that the daily stresses of raising preteen children. I guess I need to focus on acknowledging these stressors/enragers.
Thanks, Renee |

Posted - 04/16/2007 : 15:50:40 Hi Renee,
It might be helpful to reflect on whether there has been any sort of emotional event or trigger that could be the source of this ongoing pain. Even if it's some small issue, it could have triggered some feelings from the past and then your unconscious focused on the area that was initially sore from the fall.

Posted - 04/16/2007 : 15:34:13 Thanks for the replies. Actually, though, there is definately no need for an x-ray. The chiro was talking about alignment, not injury.

I got to tell you, I bruised my ribs boating 5 weeks ago, and can JUST now take a deep breath without pain. Ribs are extremely sensitive and take a while to heal.
Once you have the xray, you're free to discount all physical symptoms.

Yes but, was there any injury inflicted on Renee's rib or did it just come out of nowhere? In addition, even the chiropractor (even though I don't trust these snake oil peddlers) said the rib was fine. It is wise to have an x-ray done just in case, but then once anything serious is ruled out see this as the TMS bogey-man coming back to haunt you. I am suprised that a rib could move out of place without any blow to it.Did the chiropractor in fact have an x-ray done?
