Posted - 04/10/2007 : 17:55:02 Hi Everyone,
Can you please please please share what you have done when if you find a situation that has caused your blood pressure to go up?
Until yesterday, the past 3 months I've been doing great. I've done a lot of THE work, spent 6 months with a pyschotherapist, I've stared all my pain (fibro, CTS, migraines) in the face and thankfully these have all ceased. I've read Sarno and many other books on TMS. I am a believer and thought I was over this. I read the recent relapse posts but would love to hear some feedback specific to this problem.
This week I've had a new thing--probably new TMS symptom--my blood pressure has gone up. As far as the culprit/stressor, I had to end a contract this week with a client that I've been working with for 5 years. I have done event planning for them. Last night I delivered the bad news to them. They were pretty upset adn I found myself justifying my position and felt so ill thru the 2 hour mtg, but from the outside they would've never known. I was grace under pressure. I decided I just couldn't wrok for them anymore b/c they treat me like crap and pay me peanuts. Now, on a conscious level, I was really proud and pleased with myself for stopping this abuse. On the surface this should be something that I am elated about. But I'm not doing very well.
I won't go into the details of my pain, as I don't believe in giving it airtime, but it is similar to what happened when I had my derailment last year. This is so frightening to me.
I cannot understand why I'm so shaken up! I've been talking to myself and asking atypical kinds of questions to see if I can jar it. When I got home last night I thought I was going to faint, vomit, explode, well... I'm sure you all know the drill when you get a TMS attack. It was awful.
Today I felt better, but when I had something a teeny bit surprising happen to me at work (just a little stress) my BP went up and my head started pounding again. (This usually happens to me before a migraine, but thankfully I've not let it progress.)
I really value everyone's opinion here so much and would love some ideas about what I can do to get on top of myself again. Things have been so much better for me, then BOOM, this happens!!! This surprise. I've made a therapy appt for next week, as I realize that in therapy we never talked about my work, at least not thoroughly. I guess i've got some demons in there, beyond the obvious that I've shared.
Thank you so much for offering any clarity or direction with me over this. I really need your help. I'm SO upset at myself, b/c I was doing so great and now ... well ... not so great.
Take sweet care, >|< Penny Non illigitamus carborundum. |

I really appreciate y'alls replies. I'm still not doing very well. I just KNOW this is TMS ... I have a raging headache that I recognize happens when my BP goes up. I checked it at the drug store last night and unfortunately it is really high. I've got a lot of major stress right now. This all began Monday night when I "broke up" with my retainer client.
TennisTom, I read TDM section again and it actually was not really comforting as it wasn't by Sarno, but by another specialist who seemed to advise not getting to the root of the emotion and talked bout antidepressant efficacy. Does Sarno talk about BP in his other books? I've read them, but I don't own. I could go to amazon and find the passages.
This has happened to me 4 other times in my life. Last year it was so high and random they tested me for a pheochromositoma (sp? it's an adrenal tumor that causes high BP) and I didn't have one. This was also when my fibro was it's worst. Thank GOD this is just BP and headache and fibro seems to be at bay. I just feel so desperate to stop the throbbing in my head and to access my feelings. I made an appt with my psychoT but it's not til Tuesday.
I may go to the GP tomorrow if I can't exorcize myself tonight. I have lorazepam(ativan), and I've been thinking about taking some. I'm exhausted and so emotional. I hate the idea of taking meds, it's like I'm failing. This is just MY personal standard, and not meant to offend anyone. I think drugs can be awesome when used appropriately, but for my case, I've been SO on top of this TMS thing without them. When I was on drugs before I seemed to get worse with everything, so it scares me. Has anyone here taken something once in a while to help with the extra hard times?
Thanks again everyone. I'm going to kick the laundry bag tonight ... I don't ever seem to have privacy (kids and hubby) so it's difficult to lash out.

Posted - 04/10/2007 : 23:13:16 There's an entire chapter in THE DIVIDED MIND discussing BP.

Posted - 04/10/2007 : 22:01:00 P- have you tried the John Lee approach of getting the anger out by doing something physical like twisting a towel and (if you can) saying how angry you are at those folks at work? This might be just what you need to halt those panic like symptoms that are kicking up for you. Chances are the rage is being triggered at work and it's coming closer to consciousness.
I do this rage release work all the time in therapy and it works beautifully for me in stopping the panic attack immediately. For me I just scream it out and beat the couch at the same time. Now this probably is not possible to do at work but getting your body into it any way you can will probably be helpful. Hope that helps. |

Posted - 04/10/2007 : 21:58:18 Penny, if your bp is normally 110/72, that's fantastic! Now, you said it spiked up, but how up? Moment-to-moment fluctuations are common, espec if under stress. But if it went up a huge amount it would be worth checking out. |

Posted - 04/10/2007 : 18:12:04 You're welcome, Penny..Makes sense that it is TMS if your BP is normally good like that..Especially since it happened in the past and cleared up...Just keep talking to your brain! I need to take my own advice! It is amazing the lengths that our subconscious will go to in order to avoid feeling what's down there...Everyone always says journalling is key..I need to do that alot more..Therapy would be good too...I want to start talking to my TMS therapy as soon as I can afford it, it gets a bit expensive..but it is soooo helpful..Perhaps you can write out a list of everything in your current life that is upsetting you..These current pressures just add to the reservoir of rage from the past..I think the chest pains, neck and knee pain i have are all distractions too... I am sure you will get better suggestions from some of the old timers on here as well...I don't practice what I preach enough as far as healing my own TMS...:) |

Posted - 04/10/2007 : 18:04:23 Thanks Karen. My weight is fine, and I eat healthfully. I don't exercise as much as I should, but the thing that scares me is that this just popped up again out of the blue. Last year I had a BP attack that put me in hospital and gave me a migraine. I know this is TMS as I normally have normal BP ... I check it often b/c high bp is in my family. My BP is normally like 110/72.
Any ideas on what I can do to try to attack my subconc. on this?

Posted - 04/10/2007 : 18:00:44 Hi Penny, I typically have low blood pressure, but since I gained some weight (depression eating) it has gone up some, the top number that is...The bottom one is still low..From what I know, the top one can go up just due to stress in the moment as well..Do you meditate, pray etc? That helps me calm down, also deep breathing...Have you had high BP b4 in your life or is this brand new? Too much salt isn't good as well...Exercise is VERY helpful generally and my doctor told me that even losing 5 pounds could bring your pressure down 5 points! I don't know if you are a healthy weight or not..I am not obese but even being overweight my pressure is higher then ever..I am sure the additional stress in my current life is also a contributor..Don't stress about it (easier said then done..) Just know that it can be reversed with proper nutrition, exercise and stress reduction.. Wishing you healing, Karen |
