I am really excited about having found this Forum. I suffered from TMS about six years ago - had the soreness all over various points in body, particularly pain in the forearms. Found Sarno's book and was cured.

After a very stressful past couple of years, in the past year I have what feels to me like a lump in my throat, no real feelings of heartburn. Really felt it was anxiety. Anyway specialist (oh how I dislike their narrowmindedness) performs an upper GI and finds a small hiatal hernia with free reflux, but only mild esophageal irritation. He also performs an esophageal motility disorder which turns out normal. So, he puts me on three different types of acid reflux med over a period of six months - prilosec, nexium, protonix - none of them knock it out. I even try an generalized anxiety med - lexapro -and it does nothing. I am convinced these meds did not work because I really dont believe the symptoms were due to the hernia. I have read that 50% of people with hiatal hernias dont even have symptoms. I am convinced that I have probably had my hernia for a long time - had a set of twins eight years ago that were very big (and I am very small). The only thing that helps it is klonopin or gum chewing.

I feel worried about not taking something "to protect my esophagus". At same time I hate to be on a med that does nothing and can potentially have side effects. Doctor's nurse told me to stop taking med since it wasnt doing anything. I also discontinued the Lexapro since it did nothing.

I have started on a program of meditation and have been reading extensively in the area of metaphysics and mind/body medicine. I really believe in this stuff. I need to be belong to a group of supportive people. This is how I have healed before in the past. So here I am in this Forum and glad to be. Thank you to anyone, in advance, for just listening.

I'm with you Justme, I think we would all be a lot healthier mentally if we talked to ourselves outloud. Some of the most intelegent people I have known talked to themselves. I think it is a form of acknowledgeing our TMS unconscious.

I used to do a lot of that on my commute while listening to Schecheter's cassettes. There is a stigma to talking to ourselves in our culture that we may be viewed as "nuts", because crazy people do it, but some crazy people I have known have also been some of the most intellegent at times.

For talking-out-louders, we are fortunate to live in the era of the cell phone. Today, if we don't look like a homeless person, if we talk to ourselves, people just assume we are on the cell phone. Just wear an earpiece or a blue-tooth and no one will give you a second thought while you communicate with your innner-child or curse at the TMS gremlin.

Hi Thank you so much for your reply.It is good to hear that symptoms can go on for a long period of time, but still go away.

I just ordered Divided Mind and am looking forward to reading it.

I am also reading a great publication by a UK author that I found on this site. It is about the "BodyMind". It is 55 pages and I just downloaded and printed it the other day. Have you read it? It is so good that I am afraid to finish it. (What is up with that?) I think I am afraid of not being able to apply the principles "perfectly" enough to make it work, once I am finished reading it.

What helped me immensely in the past was actually talking to my symptoms out loud. So, if nobody was around the house I would say things like : "I know what you are up to. You can knock it off now. I am on to you. Tell me what it is you need emotionally" - things like that. I think it was equivalent to talking to my inner child. Recently I have even knelt down while talking to my inner child. It gets me closer kinesthetically to the inner child at age 8 (an age at which I suffered the death of my father). Best of luck on your meditation. Have you checked out the book The Intention Experiment - excellent. It takes meditation to the next step - Intention. Amazing stuff is being proven in this field - even retrocausation - affecting history through the power of intention.

Welcome, welcome! I too was a forearm pain suffer (for 7 years...) until reading Mindbody Perscription. After reading Divided Mind last year, I noticed a lot more converage of GI health, so if you haven't got a hold of that yet, I recommend it.

During those 7 years of pain, I can say in retrospect that I was so TERRIFIED about getting other injuries that would prevent me from enjoying life that anytime something seemingly minor happened physically, it mentally/emotionally made me pull back really deep into myself. However, I wasn't able to recognize this fear, so I think my "minor" symptoms got worse as a TMS distraction from this fear.

I wanted to write back to you coz you said you were starting meditation. Me, too! I just finished a course in mindfulness meditation based on Jon Kabat-Zinn's book Full-Catastrophe Living, and it's been a really positive force of clarity in my life!

Welcome to the forum. I've found a lot of helpful information here and it's good for me to read the experiences of others to keep my mind from drifting back to thinking physically rather than psychologically. I'm sure you'll find the support here to be helpful too.
