Posted - 03/29/2007 : 15:42:28 So can anyone explain without me having to buy the book, what exactly "The Journey" is about? What processes do you use and what principles are behind them?
Thanks, Greg

Posted - 03/27/2007 : 14:22:00 Journaling is not for everyone. I get lazy and don't journal for several days. Sometimes I use this forum as my journal. Although I may not be able to be as honest on this forum than I would be in a private journal, I find it helps.

Posted - 03/27/2007 : 02:51:34 Thanks Shawnsmith for your post. As a Brit I did download the John Eaton book and found it interesting if somewhat different to Sarno. I liked however the emphasis on planned and instant enjoyment activities. I sometimes feel I do not want to journal as Sarno suggests because it is dredging up the negative and I feel so self absorbed and it certainly is not pleasurable. Sarno talks about the balance between rage and soothe (can't remember where) and I think I am going to plan and also do instant activities that enjoy. Sometimes when you are in pain you can forget what is enjoyable. Instant...that will be the chocolate then!

Posted - 03/23/2007 : 12:11:49 As I promised above, here is the responce from Dr. John Eaton to my question of what he thought of Dr. Sarno's work:
Hi Shawn
I have a high opnion of Dr Sarno's work which, I believe, complements my own,
His discovery that blocked emotion (which, in turn, triggers symptoms via the Limbic system/Hypothalamus) is the root cause of TMS and other non-specific illnesses - is exactly my own
The main difference lies in the method of treatment. We argue that Bodymind is actively producing symptoms to warn, guide and protect the person. The solution is to act on the underlying symptom-message which is also linked to vital emotional needs arising in situations where symptoms arise or increase.
Dr Sarno, if I judge correctly, sees symptoms as psychological in origin and his method addresses the conscious and unconscious thoughts, beliefs and expectations that create what he sees as psychosomatic problems. He recommends psychotherapy (which we do not) in addition to his program of thought change, overcoming 'inner rage', and meditation.
We believe anger is one of the emotions created by Bodymind to protect the person by cueing appropriate action. If fought it triggers fresh symptoms as Bodymind works harder to protect the person. Reverse Therapy teaches people not to fight their emotions but to be guided by them. Expressing and resolving emotional needs Reduces Bodymind's crisis-bound need to trigger symptoms through the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal axis (TMS is - as you know created by overwork of the autonomic nervous system via messages from the Hypothalamus).
I hope this helps
Best wishes
John

Posted - 03/22/2007 : 14:42:52 HilaryN mentioned that there are a lot of "The Journey" practitioners in the UK as well:
quote: Meanwhile I had contacted a lady who wrote an article for the UK RSI Association magazine on how she had cured her RSI through reading Dr Sarno's book. She gave me lots of encouragement (very helpful!) and also recommended a book called "The Journey" by Brandon Bays. Brandon Bays isn't a medical person, but she describes how she healed a tumour by tackling the emotional causes. If I hadn't read TMP first I might have been a bit sceptical - but having read TMP first, "The Journey" made perfect sense. There are lots of "Journey" practitioners here in the UK, so I was able to get an appointment with one straight away."

Posted - 03/22/2007 : 14:07:36 I see that John Eaton, MD cited Dr. Sarno in his 55 page online book downloaded here:
http://www.reverse-therapy.com/pdf/reversetherapyforhealth.pdf
Here are some UK contacts for their kind of work: http://www.reverse-therapy.com/Find_a_Therapist/default.asp?SearchCountry=UK&SearchType=2
I just got done e-mailing Dr. Eaton asking him what he thinks of Dar. Sarno's work. I will let you know what he says.

Posted - 03/22/2007 : 13:22:34 You might look at http://www.reverse-therapy.com/
They use a very similar mindbody/therapy approach to healing chronic pain conditions. I haven't tried it myself, but it seems quite compatible with Sarno, merely using different terminology.
