Posted - 02/02/2007 : 14:58:52 This is a good news, bad news scenario but I would love some advice. After about 6 weeks of being a Sarno disciple, my neck pain and depression are virtually gone. Sarno had worked for me years before and has come through again. I never doubted it would.
But the problem I got back into this in the first place is hideous rectal pain and misery, a lot like Paul describes on other posts and I hope he won't mind me referencing this. For the first month back on Sarno, it was better but the last 2 weeks the misery has come back much like Paul describes. Have I lost faith and my brain is punishing me? Could this truly be physical (structural) and not pschosematic? It so hard to undertstand. Four surgeries, endless procedures and drugs have accomplished nothing. This has to be like some kind fo torture.
How do you convince yourself it is truly TMS when the misery continues? Has anyone had the same kind of suffering? I'd love to hear either on these posts or diretc e-mail. Thanks in advance...

Posted - 02/03/2007 : 17:12:51 Hi JohnO,
I'm sure Dave meant no offense, just being matter of fact and to the point. You have to understand that none of us here get paid for handing out advice and after doing it nearly a thousand times in Dave's case and nearly 1500 time in mine, it can get a bit old.
I understand you may be sensitive due to your situataion, therefore may not be looking at Dave's post from the most objective view. It's sound, solid, Sarno, from the moderator of this board and the person who single handedly keeps it going for the benefit of the entire planet--a thankless job I'm sure. I've always advised that if one has time to read only one person's replies, it be Dave's, and I'm not brown-nosing here.
I hope you don't mis-interpret my reply as mean and nasty too, I'm just being straight forward. We all have varying personalities here, some of us are direct and some are more supportive. I'm sure those who come from a more supportive approach will jump in.
My advice would be if your symptoms don't respond to reading the books then seek out a TMS friendly therapist to help you dig deeper.
Best of luck in dealing with your pain, tt

Posted - 02/03/2007 : 11:04:40 I don't see harshness in Dave's message nor do I see him putting you down. In my opinion it was a perfectly legitimate and helpful response. If what you wanted was some smiley faces and soft/gentle wording perhaps you may want to investigate this possible personality trait (Easily offended due to unconscious insecurity?) as a potential reason for your symptoms.
What "emotional work" have you been doing? Journaling? Relaxation/Visualisation?
It sounds like the rectal pain went away for a while and is now back? If it were physical, why would this be?

Posted - 02/03/2007 : 06:57:55 Dave totally misunderstood my message and his harshness is not helpful or warranted. I HAVE repudiated the physical totally. All those surgeries and drugs and treatment were BEFORE my immersing myslef back into Sarno. I have repudaited the physical wholeheartedly and that's why the recurrence is puzzling.
The brain does not "punish", correct, but according to Sarno it "protects" (better word, Dave?) from letting the emotions spill into the conscious. So maybe my brain is not punishing but protecting. In any event, I have read the books over and over and understand but maybe didn't articulate properly in my message and thanks for putting me down. It really helped. |

Posted - 02/02/2007 : 23:30:02 While I think Dave's tough love approach is necessary with this illness, I just wanted to extend my understanding to you John. I made a small recovery after receiving my diagnosis, but quickly relapsed. It can be so frustrating having to deal with the fears created by a relapse.
Reading your post reminds me that I need to keep focused on dissolving my fear of this being a long-term physical ailment. With that out of the way, I'll hopefully be better able to concentrate on my emotional stresses.
I hope that you too can get past the fear & back into a 100% TMS frame-of-mind and kick this current flare-up.

That is definitely not a good way of looking at it. TMS is not punishment nor is it anything we bring on ourselves. It is a normal reaction of the most primitive parts of our unconscious mind.

Sure, but then shouldn't conventional treatments have worked?

Steps 1 and 2 of accepting TMS are to repudiate the structural diagnosis and stop all physical treatments. How can you expect relief if you don't follow those rules? |
