Posted - 12/15/2006 : 15:40:50 I am new to the board and this is my second post. But I have been reading the Sarno books as well as the Freedom from Fibromyalgia book and I really fit the profile to a tee. In fact I think I could fit all of the personality traits. The one thing I wonder is if anyone else struggles with OCD. I knew I had a small amount but when my son was born it was full blown mania I already posted about that so I won't bore you again. But I tend to be obsessive about the symptoms and find myself having every illness in the book (pre-Sarno). I think the main reason is that I feel so bad that I think there has to be something wrong with me. I have embraced the TMS diagnosis and I believe in it. I guess what I am asking is does it take a long time to stop obsessing about your symptoms. Sometimes when the pain gets so bad that is all I can think about. Does anyone else have that problem. Sorry to ramble. Thank you. |

Hi. After reading Dr. Sarno's HBP I read Dr. Scott Brady's Pain Free for Life because I didn't know what else to do after Sarno's book. I began obsessing about symptoms and the fact that I couldn't make them dissappear by reading the book despite having improved greatly. Through Brady's book I learned I was a combination of three personalities Perfectionist/People-pleaser/Fear Prone. It's the fear prone personality that really kills me...because I obsess about the fear of pain and the fear that it will never go away and that I won't be able to enjoy the end of my 20's and to add to that I start to worry about EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE and what may or may not happen to them or me. I've just started with the journaling and it's REALLY helping and everytime and what I've learned (I think from Brady's book and from this board) is that when I'm anxious/obsessing/fearful that's just a front my subconscious is using to make me avoid getting to the real emotions deep down inside (anger, shame, sadness). So that's when I ask myself 'ok, what's going on with you?'. If I'm too busy at work to journal or if I'm out and about I'll just make a mental note of things that run through my mind that may be bothering me or I'll write a few words in a little notebook I carry in my purse...when it's time to journal at home in a 'safe' place I'll elaborate and analyze what I've written down. Hope this helps.

Posted - 12/15/2006 : 20:18:16 Hi there,
Here's a thread from a few weeks ago about OCD, in case you haven't already seen it. http://www.tmshelp.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2789
Just before I discovered Sarno's book, back in about August, I read a book called Stop Being Your Symptoms and Start Being Yourself, which I found helpful in addressing the obsession with symptoms. I also felt that because I had so many symptoms, there must be something seriously wrong, even though I'd had thousands and thousands of dollars worth of testing done that had not shown much of anything abnormal. I used to have a book about fibro that listed a little over a hundred symptoms and when I checked off the ones I had, they added up to about 90.
One thing the Stop Being Your Symptoms book pointed out which fits well with Dr. Sarno's theory is that the more you worry about symptoms, the more your autonomic nervous system is going to aggravate existing symptoms and even produce new ones.
Do you take any pain medication? Dr. Sarno does say that some people need to continue using pain medication for a little while until they make enough progress with the TMS to have a reduction in pain. I've been weaning off of my pain medications, but I'm still on the full dose of Ultram, because that's the one that's been most helpful for me, so I decided to make it the last one I wean off.
Please don't feel like people here will object to longer posts. I know some forums really stress keeping posts short but some of us get pretty lengthy at times, so feel free to say what you need to say. Anyone who's not interested in long posts can just skip over it and there are many here who will be happy to read whatever you say. Take care! |
