I use tarot as a mechanism to gain greater insight into the influences, emotions, etc. acting in my life. It's a way of using symbols to get past the intellectualism that sometimes limits my understanding and problem-solving ability. I usually just read for myself, but occasionally also with friends, and I've found it helpful. But just yesterday I had a really powerful experience with it.
A friend who reads tarot has just gotten a new deck, called the Thoth deck, which is quite different from the traditional Rider-Waite Tarot, using different symbology and relationships. She used a layout involving the Qabalistic Tree of Life. The layout absolutely had my number. It told me very clearly that my main unconscious issue is the loss (repression) of my deep emotions and unique purpose, in the attempt to be a "good person" under parental (now internalized) judgment, and that I need to make the journey into that part of myself to find my purpose and reclaim the lost parts of myself. It had all kinds of auxiliary information and messages about how I feel about the journey, what my true self is like, and where I am now. It was really amazing and a great confirmation that truly that is what's going on, and I'm not missing some other important thing.
So if you're looking for a new and creative way to access your unconscious, getting into Tarot may be a rewarding experience. :-)

Posted - 10/30/2006 : 12:42:19 My favorite site is LearnTarot.com: http://www.learntarot.com/.
The best way if you're interested is just go ahead and buy a deck that appeals to you. Try to choose one that comes with a book; then go from there. I use the Hanson-Roberts deck, which is based on Rider-Waite and often recommended for beginners. If you Google for either you'll find tons of stuff.

I don't have any book recommendations but have found a few good practical websites. Email is on the way.

Posted - 10/30/2006 : 10:22:39 Kinda off topic, but would you mind emailing me some book, articles and site recommendations on it? My email is in my profile. I have a friend who's interested in astrology. :) |

Posted - 10/30/2006 : 10:15:05 My friend did the reading; I think she's been doing it for a few years. I've been doing it about a year; usually my readings are helpful but not as good as that one. :-)

Posted - 10/30/2006 : 07:19:07 Hey Armchair :) How long have you been practicing reading tarot to get that level of insight and intuition? Sounds like an interesting and creative way to solve problems - I like that! |

Posted - 10/29/2006 : 20:05:07 I don't have the deck; a friend did the reading for me and she has it. I think it's really beautiful, fascinating, and a great deck, and will hopefully be getting it in the near future.

Posted - 10/27/2006 : 14:56:15 Similar yet different, I started to get in touch with my astrological nature as a Scorpio which at least in part, defines me as greatly secretive but with a passionate nature. I don't "harm" others unless I feel I was unfairly wronged. It has been important for me to have a perspective on personality that validates that I don't easily share my feelings and affirm that I don't just lash out blindly either. It's not an excuse to fall back on but some insight that gives me something to work on. I even told my therapist that it's a tool I'm using to evolve my personality beyond repression and pain. There are many resources out there to help us become more fully ourselves. Isn't this really what TMS work is about, authentication and taking responsibility for ourselves? |
