Yes,
In today's modern times, the patient would have been given a heavy dose of NSAID's to help with the pain he was experiencing with his back, as well as anti-anxiety drugs to help him deal with it.
When that didn't work it would have been steroids.
When that didn't work, it would have been surgery to repair the mysteriously punctured tissue surrounding the spine.
