There was a talk show on National Public Radio this morning discussing the idea that Ken Lay may have died from the stress. It didn't necessarily cover TMS specifically but the subject matter became very "mindbody" oriented. Several callers cited examples of family members who either died or suffered medically following either acute or chronic stress. The show was overwhelmingly supportive of the mindbody link.

My ears are always tuned to pick this stuff up and I frequently find that the general belief is supportive. Then when something happens and people get a diagnosis - that belief gets lost.

Any thoughts??

I definitely believe in the mindybody connection and how stress can be manifested into physical symptoms which can lead to death unfortunately.

Quick story. At the beginning of this year I was under a lot of stress. At least for me. I had just lost my 2 beloved dogs 2 months apart and my father was in and out of hospitals. One night without warning I lost sight in my right eye. Of course I freaked out and went to the doctor. It turned out the main vein that leads to the retina got blocked. Doctor related it to my eye having a stroke. He said it I wasn't the age I was and in the good shape I was in, it could have easily been my heart as many people suffer heart attacks from stress.

Long story short, as I got the stress under control my vision started coming back. Some damage has been done to the eye but not major. It was a big wake up call as to what stress can do.

Interestingly enough, during the eye thing I had no TMS back pain.

I think that we all have known people who have died within months of their spouse, it is then said that they have died of a broken heart, it would probably be more accurate and scientific to say that the stress of finding themselves alone and without the love and security they might have had in the relationship was stressful and upsetting enough to bring about their own death. possibly a lot of death certificates that give heart attack or heart failure as the cause of death are accurate as far as diagnosis but no doctor will add that someone's heart attack was brought on by stress eventhough this is often the case, stress can not only cause irregular heart beat it can cause one to neglect diet , lack sleep , pick up bad habits, drink too much , get addicted to drugs, eat badly, drive dangerously, all things that contribute to an early death, stress can kill you definetely, I agree. For some it also leads to suicide, yet some people can strive on stress, I think stress is good as long as it is not continuous, a little rush of adreneline now and then is good for the soul, it is the chronic , no end and no hope in sight kind of stress that can kill you.
