Hi, I am hoping that some of you can help me with the baffling symptom I am now experiencing, twice this week I have woken from a deep sleep, because I couln.t breathe, it felt like I was choking, also I have had a lot of reflux and post nasal drip in the daytime, trouble swallowing also, is this tms? or acid reflux or maybe from the sinus condition, it is very scary and I am afraid to go to sleep, my fibro symptoms are quite bad , I am under a lot of stress because of family concerns, but this pain in my throat, sometimes my ear also, is bothersome enough without the choking, any of you experienced this? any input would be appreciated.

Here’s another TMS answer, with full empathy.

That was my most recent TMS bout — almost exactly what Miche describes in first post. I only realized that it has completely gone on reading this. It was about a month or two ago. And it happened to coincide with a rare “check-up” appointment with my doc. She gave me a “prescription medical food,” which definitely made things worse. And then I kind of moved on and eventually forgot about it, returning to my more favored symptoms to do with eyes, and some new stuff. Which I could be scared about.

And I’m not even going to mention the new stuff, and thing-ify it.

My main news is that I have been INTENSELY experiencing depression and anxiety very actively at times, almost unbearable. This is good news, I think, as my attention is now psychological. I think it’s important to remember that these are TMS equivalents. I’ve been working through some quite deep issues (and believe me, I have done this before). And I fully expect the symptoms will fade.

To keep reminding myself that these are all EQUIVALENTS, and that I can breathe into and feel ALL OF IT is quite mind-blowing, quite reality-destroying, as Sarno’s work is, if you really do it as prescribed. I feel I am facing core human issues instead of distracting myself, as many of my friends of my age are doing, with an endless round of “bad backs” (of which there is an outburst in my social world) or worse.

The good news is that I came into Sarno with the worst back ever, which had been going on for decades, and now, at 65, no such symptom even dares raise its furry little beast head.

Happy New Year O Brave Brothers and Sistas

Love is the answer, whatever the question

Within weeks my acid reflux was gone. Now several years later it is rarely a problem and when it comes I bring no fear and it goes again. Similar experience with the choking and coughing at night. It still comes occassionally. I take nothing for it. I bring no fear to it. It goes away. Harry

Hi Harry. Are you still around on the board?

Jerica
By definition there is religion and there is spirituality.
Wisdom tells me to keep these separated but you can do as you please.

There is a known religion in which in order to be punished you need to be guilty and in in order to be guilty you need to be born a sinner. If you have a hard time dealing with this concept then maybe this is because you were taught religion instead of being drawn to it naturally out of your own beliefs. If you mom is religious you could tell her that there is also "a provision" for tolerance towards different opinions or other religions in her own religion and she should think about that before blaming you which is just a way to reassure herself of something she may have serious doubt about.
Her attitude is that of a fearful person in front of you when you express your legitimate point of you and she reacts accordingly.

The same thing goes with TMS if you doubt that's what you have you'll always try to reinforce the idea of a physical abnormality to explain the symptoms. it is your belief in what it is that will make the difference. If you belief 50/50 you can consider yourself lucky if you get healed 50% at best and you'll be likely to be left with more doubt. Eliminating the doubt first increases your chances drastically.
Standing for your own beliefs can help you accomplish that, so I think you are making progress.
Chances are that once you'll be healed you'll find more people listening because you'll know exactly what to tell them.

Cat, that sounds like me too. You said "oppressive" -- I have to think some more about that. Whenever I do have throat/breathing/chest stuff (which is often) I have to stop and think about what it is I feel I can't feel or say, or what is stopping me from being free. I get that fuzzy feeling in my throat from the drip, when you swallow it just feels weird and sometimes poking and sometimes just congested etc.

I have been more vocal about things that bother me, like yesterday when my mom was here I told her how I feel like religion is about punishment and why hasn't God healed me and she was all you don't have enough faith -- and I was going back and forth trying to explain that when I did have tons of faith I still wasn't healed. It was hard and she was saying I was just arguing with her but I didn't see it as arguing as much as just being factual. I tried it, it didn't work, why do you keep telling me it is my own fault? That's what I didn't understand. I guess in a way I can't really talk to my mother because she doesn't understand my mind, how I think. How confused I am. I am asking questions and she takes it as an attack and gets all mad and stuff.

She taught me about religion and NOW she's saying, no I didn't tell you THAT, you came up with THAt etc. So I feel like I was lied to as a child. Or that I'm nuts and not "getting" what everyone else "gets."

I can't talk to my sister because she's completely nuts and in a bad way. She changes the subject every minute, doesn't listen, doesn't seem to care and comes up with silly "solutions".

Everyone around me doesn't seem to LISTEN. Even my husband runs around the house doing this and that and I feel like I'm having a conversation with him as he's passing by. And he doesn't know what to tell me, anyway. he tries but he's so BUSY! EVeryone's so busy. I have to ask him to just SIT DOWN next to me and listen and talk to me.

So there is that underlying thing where I feel I can't talk to people, that I'm not being understood. But I don't know if that has anything to do with the TMS stuff I feel or not. I am a mess of doubts.

Yes Miche for at least 3 months I did experience similar pronounced symptoms which are now on their way out since I diagnosed them as TMS imperatives. It took me for ever to make sure . I had a lot of post nasal drip , feeling of constriction in the throat and very sensitive pharynx /larynx when I touched it my neck was all red from intense blood circulation in the area and it even seem to go up in my ear canals from under my jaws and up like the beginning of a bad flue or so. no fever no coughing though but sometimes hard to swallow and the feeling there was something fuzzy stuck in my throat in the back of my tongue which also felt as if it was swollen or bitten sometimes.
my voice go horse but what give tms away was that the symptoms would move around and there was no fever. the doctors couldn't find anything.
But what I discovered gradually was that it is the fear and related anxiety resulting from the symptoms that was causing the sensations of oppression like choking and shortness of breath and even heart strange reactions . I addressed the problem with fear eradication techniques and it went away. heat on my neck with a small electric blanket at night did me a lot of good,

Miche,
This is a TMS board, so I'm going to give you the TMS answer. It sounds like it could be something in the asthma/allergy/vocal cord dysfunction TMS realm. If that is the case, yes, allergy shots may alleviate symptoms if you go the "classic" route. My own recent experience with this is that if I sit down and force myself to have a good cry and really give over to the anxiety I'm experiencing, even for only 10 minutes, I breathe easier for hours afterwards. Coincidence?

Sounds like you are on the right track. I struggle with reflux (in addition to other symptoms). Like you, I've been diagnosed with fibro, although I think that fibro is TMS. Stress exacerbates all the symptoms, be they fibro or reflux. You know this. I have taken all the reflux meds and tolerate few of them but I am in favor of Maalox, Pepcid, Extra Strength Tums and don't laugh--chamomile tea. It works. I drink a lot of it, even at the end of fancy dinners in restaurants. Also dries the sinuses if that's an issue you're looking to improve.

From a preventative standpoint, you might have food sensitivities. Many people who carry the fibro diagnosis do, but you probably know this, too. It goes with the yeast issue and hence, the improvement when sugar is removed from ones diet. Over the years, I've enjoyed better days when I cut out wine, sugar, wheat and dairy. How simple, right! But what a sacrifice! It's tall order, but the fibro, reflux and migraine lit do preach ditching half your diet, because it works. And don't forget, nix the coffee!

It's difficult to live without comfy vices, but I have to say that pitching them helped me send a recent relapse into early remission.
I would also concur with Peg about the sleep apnea research, as my dear friend suffers from this. It's treatable!
Peg Posted - 02/27/2010 : 18:11:47
How about a sleep study to rule out sleep apnea? That could cause you to wake up gasping for breathe.

Best,
Peg

My gastro doc told me I could take Maalox tablets as well as Prevacid. Prevacid is best taken on an empty stomach but it's also one of those slow release capsules and they don't get absorbed til they get to your small intestine. So I wondered how Maalox would affect a PPI in that case. Anyway I try to always take my PPI on an empty stomach as I've read its effectiveness is reduced by about half if you've eaten. I also don't take Maalox with any other meds because they won't absorb properly.

That said, I get annoying strange weird breathing stuff all the time on and off, comes and goes. I can wake up gasping or panicking some nights then be fine for weeks or months without having it again. I can get chokey feelings, throat constricting feelings, lump in throat or something "poking" me, slight wheezing, tightness in lungs, weird weird stuff. Just comes and goes! I am diagnosed with reflux and a mild hiatial hernia and had barium swallows plus an EGD. I've been on prevacid for over a year now. I can not eat chocolate, tomato stuff, coffee, soda, and many other things.

Makes sense, thank you Dave.
Dave Posted - 06/29/2006 : 08:20:54
I'm not sure, but you probably should not take maalox simultaneously with prilosec. Acid pump inhibitors (prilosec, prevacid, nexium) need an empty stomach to work effectively because they operate directly on the cells of the stomach walls. If you coat the stomach with maalox the priolsec can't do it's job. It should be taken on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before eating.
miche Posted - 06/28/2006 : 16:20:47
Thank's Dave and Indy for your replies, I took prilosec last night. ( had been off it for months) plus maalox, and although I still have symptoms today ,at least I slept through the night, I am pretty certain it is tms related, the tighness in upper body has to affect the digestive system but I would not rule out candida as an added factor seing antibiotic was my middle name for many years. Also I usually stay away from sugar, but lately I have INDULGED, quite a bit,It would be better for me to do my tms homework than drown my worries in a bowl of ice cream , I know better, so I am starting anew I dumped the ice cream out ( the little that was left) I will stay on the meds for a while until I get on top of things , plus I will concentrate on the tms work which I have neglected to do lately.
Indy Posted - 06/28/2006 : 08:01:24
Hi Miche

Have you considered that parasites and accompanying Candida Albicans infection might be contributing to many of your problems, including choking at night? I would have yourself tested for both these with a naturopathic doctor or a health practitioner who tests for microorganism invasion in the body. This choking happens to many people suffering from parasites in the upper body. Many of my clients suffering from fibromylgia have severe parasitic invasions. Don't rule out this physical cause if TMS is not suspected.

Cheers
Indy
Dave Posted - 06/28/2006 : 07:27:50
It could definitely be acid reflux. You may wish to try pepcid or zantac, which are very benign and effective.
