I am working hard to accept the TMS diagnosis of my back pain but i can't seem to get the idea that 'scar tissue' in my muscles is causing the pain. I have had chiropractors and massage therapists tell me this so it is entrenched in my mind. Does anyone know if there is a known causal relationship between scar tissue and muscle pain? Is this just another stab in the dark by baffled specialists?

If you buy into the "scar tissue is causing your pain" story then you are in for a rough ride. You must ignore this incorrect "diagnosis", as, incorrect, because it is, incorrect.

One thing about doctors is if you listen carefully to their exact words regarding chronic pain syndromes like TMS they will use words like, "may", "could", "often", "might". Very rarely will they say, "x IS causing your pain".

Read Sarno.

Do The Work.

Reject The Structural Diagnosis (for example: scar tissue).

Ignore The Pain, It Is Benign, You Will Not Be Harmed By It.

Depending on where the scar tissue is, eg a leg or foot tendon, it can be broken up with friction massage. I haven't had this done, but I hear it is painful, requires a few sessions, but works. I think a sports oriented PT would do it if it is that kind of injury.

I have had 7 pelvic/abdominal surgeries and am absolutely full of scar tissue. I was finally told that I had so much scar tissue and that it was entrapping nerves so my pain would probably be permanent. I am almost completely pain free today. Don't believe everything your doctors tell you- it can indeed cause you harm. It is called the nocebo effect and it is powerful.

I've had 4 surgeries on my lower back and was told by Chiropractors and therapists over the years that the scar tissue was a major contributing factor to my pain. This is in essence a life sentence, because the scar tissue doesn't go away. I have other major scars on my body that have never given me pain. After I discovered Sarno, my pain diminished significantly. So much for the "scar tissue" theory. Do not believe it. Chiropractors and therapist tell you that because they cannot cure you. They cannot cure you because you have TMS. Hang in there.
