Well, Today is a new day and thank God Fred Amir's book arrived yesterday..I am still reading Dr. S's newest book, but something tells me that Fred Amir's book is going to be very important in my recovery from TMS just based on reading the Introduction...I appreciate those who suggested I get his book as well..Dr. Sopher's book will be arriving in the mail any day now..I am DETERMINED to heal this TMS..And this forum is very important to me..I hope that any arguments that happened between a few members doesn't cause a problem with the forum continuing...That would be very sad as I believe this could help ALOT of people, including me..I need group support as I am a people person and very isolated here in Vegas...This is almost like group therapy and I pray it continues...Tomorrow morning I have a phone session with Don Dubin, wish me luck! Lastly, I am trying to tell myself that even the whole coughing incident that irritated my neck yesterday morning will have a positive outcome...I will realize even more that it isn't physical it is just TMS...My prayer is that I bounce back (no pun intended) from yesterday quickly..And continue to improve daily...Bottom line, I want my LIFE back...Thanks for taking the time to read my post..Hope to hear back from some of you..Your input is so valuable..

Dr Ziggles,

Excellent advice. I do think it applies to a lot of us. In my own case, though I am not up to the several hundred posts of so some, I have a different problem: I have a tendency to gather information endlessly, analyze to death, but rarely take concrete action. I have been in therapy for 1 1/2 years now and even my therapist agrees, I probably know more than she about all the best techniques--I've read all the books--for getting better (Depr/Anx). The problem is, I never advance beyond what I do so well, which is to become an "expert" on whatever subject. And without action, all the rest is useless. That's a fact!

Dear ACL,
Your compassion heart is very clear...Thank you so much and I do feel much more comfortable again..I was just thinking that I was spilling my guts too much and also didn't want to be a TMS forum 'hog' lol! Yes even this can be a distraction from doing the 'real' and hard work...I'll let you know how it goes with Don Dubin today...
God bless you dear friend,
Karen

Karen,

So glad to hear you are reading Mr. Amir. I think his approach will resonate with you. Remember that even when you are not posting or reading, you always have our support and belief that you will recover.

Dr Ziggles is right that it's easy not to force oneself to do the true work of TMS, which is beyond reading, etc.: truly facing and acknowledging (and sometimes experiencing) the difficult emotions. I am having some trouble with this right now. It is so easy to distract oneself, whether by this board or anything else. But the distraction plays right into the TMS's strategy. I wish you luck in short-circuiting this, and hope that you always feel welcome here whenever you do need some conversation or input.

Thanx DrZiggles..I appreciate your honesty with me...I know I need to look within and I am doing that at the same time that I am studying and using the forum for support...I am not looking for members of the forum to help me with self esteem issues at all...What I seek from members of the forum is encouragement and hope that I will recover from this, that is all..I know I write too often and it is embarassing a bit to hear you point it out...I just have WAY too much time on my hands since the neck TMS has had me house bound for one month now in considerable pain...As i mentioned I am also quite lonely in Vegas and have no family here...Most 'regular' people don't understand the concepts of TMS..So it is quite refreshing to have people to talk to on here...I suppose most of the other people, although sufferers of TMS as well probably have more distractions then I do, ie..a family, a normal job, etc...I cannot even paint for the past month and it is sort of driving me crazy...I did not mean to be self centered by writing so much or asking for help...If you knew me you would realize that as soon as i am well enough, I will more then give back everything I have received in trying to help others who still suffer...

Hi--

I have read many of your posts and got your email and I'm pleased with your enthusiasm about the TMS concept and the improvements that you are having. As have been mentioned in recent posts, you need to start focusing on:
1. truly accepting TMS as the cause of your symptoms, and changing your physically based mindset, which has been developing of a period of years. This can take time.
2. working on the psychological issues that are the root of TMS. Not to be rude, but you need to start looking inward for support and self-esteem, rather than depending on members of the forum for constant reassurance and advice. This is a life-long process, and for many people, self-esteem issues play a big role in their TMS in the first place.
3. When it comes to TMS, quantity does not equal quality. The number of posts you write, the amount of time you spend here, the number of TMS books and videos you watch or TMS doctors you see do not increase the speed or extent of your recovery. In fact, it's probably an inverse relationship. People that have every TMS book known to man and go from one to the other are missing the point. They are simply developing another obsession to replace the one that their pain and physical symptoms once represented. Sure, that's better than pain, but it is not really treating the problem.

Stop reading new books and start WORKING. This is the hard part, the digging deep into yourself to see the parts you are afraid of, or ashamed of, or don't like. The family issues, the personality issues, the trauma or abuse issues, if relevant.

GET OUT OF HERE. Work on your life and yourself. That's when you will be a TMS success story. I hope I am not being too harsh--but you asked for my advice! I think this is a common problem with TMSers, as you will notice as you read through the archives.

You are on the right track, and have what it takes to get better. Good luck!
