According to Dr. Sarno, TMS pain is caused by mild oxygen deprivation of the muscles. I found that by increasing blood flow to those muscles brings some temporary relief. I have upper-back pain, so I swing my arms and make those muscles between my shoulder blades move while breathing deeply and trying to relax. Sometimes, especially at night, I apply Ben Gay which helps ignoring the pain.

i still use ice for 15 min. then heat for 15 min in the shower on my neck and that helps increase healthy blood flow to the area...

Also try diffusing your own trigger points with pressure from a tennis ball and then stretching - it seemed to help.
