Apparently, 16 million Americans have "IED." If this isn't proof that our culture fosters repressed anquish I don't know what is. I'm as guilty as anyone of occassionally flipping out when some jerk cuts me off in traffic, but I'm pretty sure it's not a disorder. Actually, I think a more accurate name for this would be Intermittent A**hole Disorder, or "IAD." Thoughts?

Just the idea of taking a drug for anger is a bit surreal, but I'm sure you're correct...someone is working on one right now. If there's any truth to the symptom imperative at all, the drug will include a warning that "side effects may include back pain, anxiety, depression, gastro-intestinal problems, OCD, hand and arm pain, leg pain, etc. etc."

I have this disorder, as many of us do. It is blowing up at people to mask feelings of low self esteem. The anger does not always correspond to the stimuli. And yes, there are drugs developed for this. Psychotropic medications used with Intermittent Explosive Disorder include:

Carbamazepine (Tegretol and others).
Divalproex (Depakote).
Fluoxetine (Prozac).
Gabapentin (Neurontin).
Lamotrigine (Lamictal).
P henytoin (Dilantin).
Sertraline (Zoloft).
Venlafaxine (Effexor).

I'll bet a buck that the R&D dept at Glaxo is feverishly working on a drug for this.
