Has anyone had any experience with chest pain from TMS causes?
I have been experiencing a painful congested feeling in my chest for more than 6 months now and the doctors can't find a cause for it. I sometimes feel I can't get a breath, tho asthma has been ruled out. The pain is generally in the center of the chest, tho it moves from side to side and up and down at times, and at the worst times is all over. It used to go away at night when I slept or when I rode my bike vigorously, but lately it is beginning to bother me at those times also. It felt better when I first read about Sarno, but I can't get past the feeling that it is something serious, especially since I have not read about these particular symptoms in TMS literature. I'm frightened by this and am afraid it will never go away and will eventually cause me to have to stop working. Has anyone out there heard of anything like this being TMS?
Thanks for any help you can give me,
Angie

Assuming you've ruled out heart problems (stress test, echo cardiogram) then it is likely to be TMS.

Chest pain could be due to GERD (acid reflux). Try an over-the-counter remedy (Pepcid AC for example) and see if you get relief. If so then you probably have GERD and might need a stronger medication (such as Prilosec) if you cannot eliminate it by treating the symptoms as TMS.

GERD or not, chest pains can be TMS. Again, you should have a full cardiologist work-up, but assuming you get a clean bill of health, it is safe to ignore the symptoms and treat as you would any other TMS symptom.

Angie,

I recently had a sudden tightness in my chest during a very important lunch meeting. The tightness gradually went away by the end of the day. I visited my doctor (who happens to be a cardiologist) and had the usual battery of tests including a treadmill test. The doctor proclaimed me to be healthy. I've since had several milder 'attacks' of the same sort that have gone away immediately.

Since you've already been checked out by a physician, you might think about any new pressures in your life over the last six months.

See p.109 in The Mindbody Prescription under equivalents of TMS. Sarno writes,
quote:
The esophagus at the top of the GI tract may be the site of spasm, perceived as an aching pain in the chest right under the breastbone. It feels as though the lower end of the esophagus is being squeezed."

Good luck!

I had pain in my chest but it was more at the surface level. Hard to explain, but it was sort of between the skin and breastbone. Felt like a fireball and it would move around my chest. It got so bad at times I vaguely remember strapping icepacks to my chest. Eventually it shifted to another area.

Definitely, yes, this sounds like the TMS chest pain both my husband and I have experienced. Lately, my husband has been under tremendous pressure at work and he gets a tightness in his chest which hurts enough for him to grab his chest. An echocardiogram and stress test were done and the cardiologists say he's healthy as a horse. Then, the other night I was out with my family and I was getting aggravated about something (an argument between my husband and twelve year old about clothes) and I got chest pain that radiated into my neck. It lasted about an hour and a half then went away. Since I'm a TMS person, I know this was just another part of the whole scenario. On the Tar Pit Yoga website, I spoke with a guy named simon and his chief TMS symptom was chest pain. Not to worry. Just read your Dr. Sarno books and do your journaling. Good luck!

I have had chest pains, sometimes so severe that I felt that I was having a heart attack. In fact, once I took an ambulance to emergency and the Doctor found nothing wrong with me. By his attitude, he intimated that I was somehow "faking it" and wasting his time. Believe me, I was in severe pain. This was many years before I encountered Dr. Sarno's book. I am sure that the pain was TMS. It would go from the middle of the back to the chest, last a few days with varying degrees of severety and then move somewhere else. 2&1/2 years ago, I started applying Sarno's principles, especially stopping all treatments (Chiro & other "hands on"). I have not had a reocurrence of the chest pain since.
