Does anyone have any information on the relationship of Peripheral neuropathy and TMS?

Colleen-
A year ago I too would have been very skeptical about all this TMS business....even though I did realize the connection between the mind and the body....but not to this extent and not in this way....I'm an RN so tend to think of things mostly in the physical vain....so when my problems started I was totally convinced something was definitely physically wrong....it was just a question of finding out what it was. After multiple doctor visits, exams, tests, sitting in hot tubs (which I absolutely hated!),medications....and no answers and no relief....I was desparate....I felt like I had been "thrown out like yesterday's trash"....I searched the web...putting in every conceivable category in Google...some of the information I read was pretty scary.....I even downloaded a $25 book....which after reading I was depressed even more because according to it I would have had to spend big chunks of my day concentrating on my pain...with no quarantee of success...and all this would take years...then my son gave me his Dr. Sarno book..."Healing Back Pain"....I knew that he had had a terrible back problem that had gotten better and that he had mentioned seeing John Stossell on t.v. and that someone had given him this book and after reading it and putting into practice Dr. Sarno's ideas his back had gotten better...I really didn't give it too much thought at the time...now I had the time and the pain so I started reading it...really, what did I have to lose...I felt like I saw myself on every page...it made such sense to me....but how could this be...it seemed too simple.....I kept reading and high-lighting the lines that "were me"....I bought my own copy of HBP and bought MBP at the same time...to my amazement as I read I stopped thinking about running to a doctor to find the answer...the days went by and I slowly felt the pain decrease....I have since bought Dr. Sarno's first book "Mind Over Back Pain"....so I have the three....I also have given copies of HBP and MBT to two friends....I must admit I am cautious who I discuss this with....I have gotten "the look" from some people....but I figure they are the losers!
P.S. I am looking forward to my next routine doctor's visit to see his reaction when I explain to him how I got better!

Thank You for all your responses. You have to understand why I keep asking. First, I have been seen by Doctors in one of the very top Hospital in the USA. It is hard to get past that since my brother is a Doctor and my Dad is trained as a Scientist. This is where I am coming from. I am a Teacher and everything becomes an "academic endeavor" to me. Secondly, now that my Mom is gone, I have NO one to talk these things over with....which is why this forum is so great. My husband is also a Scientist/Bio-Medical Engineer and so this won't go to far with him either and he has just started a new job at a highly respected medical company.... I am not going to share all this with our children....although let's face it, they know I am not doing so well. I have no siblings to speak with. I am seeing a Therapist since all this, and she is good but knows less about TMS than I do.
I have prayed on this A LOT as I am devout in my Religious beliefs.
So, that is why I keep asking for "proof".

The correct term for all of these symtoms is : "We don't know" But we on the forum know it is tms. Good call Dave. Paul.

Colleen,
I had similar symptoms (to Moose) where I was getting these electric shock type feelings down my arms on both sides. I could tell you what my doc or chiro said they thought it was but instead I will tell you what it really turned out to be: TMS.

It was one of the first symptoms that I was able to make go away (within a few weeks of reading MBP). Maybe because it was the last symptom to develop before I found Sarno's books? No matter, what matters is that by doing the emotional work that Sarno recommends, I was able to make the wicked tingling (and eventually all of my pain) disappear.

In addition to doing all the emotional stuff, I quit everything else cold turkey. I stopped stretching, threw out my special pillows, started riding my bike again etc.

I wrote letters to my doc and all of the "naturopathic" practicioners and told them about Dr. Sarno and why I was never coming back. I wrote letter after letter to myself telling "me" why I believed I had TMS and why I was not giving up on becoming pain free. It took me about six months to get 70% better, another six to get 90% better and a few months after that to get 100% - but I got there. You can too.

Hi Colleen,

As Dave says, it is helpful to have a leap of faith for the TMS "cure". Most doctors have never heard of Sarno or think he is a quack. Doctors have so much invested in their training and with the litigious nature of medicine today, they are not going to stray far from commonly accepted diagnoses and procedures. If you are anywhere near the small handfull of TMS doctors an exam by one would be useful but not absolutely necessary. If it's TMS you have, belief and reading his books is enough. The list of TMS doctors can be found on the Home Page of this site, or at the www.tarpityoga.com site.

I think you mentioned that you go to church. I think that can be a good help to aid in practicing belief. It helps to have faith in the ability for one to cure oneself.

Good Luck,
tt

A couple years ago I lost my job and had to go to work for my father; a situation I absolutely despised. During this time, both of my arms and hands began to sting, tingle and burn. This had never happened to me before. I was told I had a kind of symetrical peripheral neuropathy. As soon as I landed a new job, it went away. I'ver never had it since. No question it was TMS for me.

I too am constantly asking if this could be TMS.

I suggest you stop asking, and just take a leap of faith. Follow the treatment suggestions in Dr. Sarno's book. You have nothing to lose by accepting that you have TMS. On the other hand, if you continue to ask yourself whether or not it is TMS, the doubt will prevent recovery.

Peripheral Neuropathy. I just saw your post and wanted to comment. This is what I am told I have, "Peripheral Neuropathy of unknown origin". I am told about 11 or 12% of these neuropathies are of "unknown origin". Both my feet burn with a tingling type of pain. I go to bed with ice on my feet. Have you been tested for diabetes? These neuropathies are most common in diabetics; although only one Doctor told me that trauma can cause them as well. Mine occurred 6 weeks post-op from a total hysterectomy ( when I returned to taking daily walks) which directly follwed my Mom's death from ovarian cancer. I have been told by numerous Doctors it is of unknown origin and probably will not go away.....but they really do not know how to treat it.?! That is when I did some research, saw a show with Dr. Sarno and got his book. I am new to this and have a long way to go. I too am constantly asking if this could be TMS. I am also grieving my Mom's death and my surgery; so I know a lot is going on with me. I have a family to raise, a home and a job I would love to return to (teaching).

Interesting how many diagnoses there are for the same symptoms. I have foot tingling and occasional numbness in my left foot, and pain in the groins (both sides) and back. My diagnosis was a damaged L4 nerve with referred pain to the groins. The back and groin pain is much improved, but the foot tingling and numbness are unchanged.

Yes, I have foot pain/tingling/numbness in both feet that is caused by TMS. My back tightens and the foot pain is directly related to the back pain. I was told I had tarsal tunnel (I had positive NCV tests) but Sarno told me that was "baloney". I saw Sarno 18 months ago and he diagnosed TMS. For some reason, I've made very little progress.
