My 17 year old son has had chronic forearm pain for 2.5 years. He has become very interested in Sarno's theory and has read one of his books and is beginning another. His pain has only been in his forearms (top and bottom). Have you heard of anyone else who has been helped through Dr. Sarno's approach who has pain in this one area? |

Thank you so much, Andrew. It was in practicing music that my son's pain began. He was in his freshman year of high school and had just come off of a successful high school cross country season. In after-season running he developed shin splints. There were many "star" runners in his grade much faster than he was. He was also in a church high school basketball league and was sitting on the bench where in 8th grade he played all the time.
It seems like he then made a mental shift that he was then going to be the best at music since the athletics hadn't worked out. So, he practiced piano and guitar and trumpet a lot and piano with not a real relaxed technique. The pain has never gone away and he is now finishing his junior year of high school.
I have offered to find him a therapist and so far he has not been interested, but I agree that it is difficult for someone that age to have the self-knowledge to work through so many issues. Part of the reason may be that we have been to SO MANY medical professionals trying to find an answer to his pain and he is sick of appointments. I will continue to encourage him in that regard. Right now he is really trying to think the issues through that Sarno presents and has started playing the guitar again.
His personality trait of wanting to be the "best" is still there. He is now into chess and is really devoting himself to that and a competition coming up. He is also reading Sarno and does see himself in those books.

Hello ... You haven't revealed much about what your son is doing with his life, or may be feeling emotionally, so this is a bit difficult to comment on ... but when I was 18 in my first year of colleage, as an aspiring musician attending a music conservatory, my forearms suddenly started to ache and hurt so much that I had to leave school the following year and re-evaluate my goals in life ...
Years later, (hindsight is 20/20), I faced TMS again this year in the form of foot pain, hand/wrist problems, as I contemplated transitions in my career again: now I know that all of it, even in my early years, was TMS: a subconscious fear of success/failure/anger manifesting itself physically in the body ...
Back then, (with the help of a therapist) I figured out what was going on, overcame the pain, and was able to play music again ... and this year, when TMS came back ... I was able to overcome nearly 100% of the problems by reading and studying Dr. Sarno's books and reading messages on this board ... and reprogramming my brain with conscious thought.
My recommendation would be for your son to speak with someone with whom he feels comfortable to figure out some of the inner dialogue/conflict ... at his age, I think it's difficult to do alone and the lessons learned in his early years may help him for all of his life.
