I've really been buckling down and focusing on some major issues these past few weeks. Last night's dream was particularly vivid. I went to see Dr. Sarno, not for the first time mind you. His office was in the wood-paneled of a house. I arrived very upset because I was "feeling all these emotions and didn't know what to do with them." He was with another patient. I sat down next to this other man, and proceeded to wait while Dr. Sarno gave him herbs and fiber. Then it was time for Dr. Sarno to talk to me. I remember being very upset and wanting to cry and pleading to Sarno that I had all these emotions that wanted to escape but I didn't know how to handle them.

I really think I'm making progress in my TMS work, and I feel this dream could be instrumental in helping me advance even further. Do you think it's about TMS or something deeper? And what do you think I should explore based on this dream? Right my fears center on leaving home (I'm buying a place soon) and actually getting on with my life sans TMS. Everytime I think that I don't want TMS to go away, I just remind myself this is nothing but old conditioning and that I can't let it scare me. I also came to an important realization the other day: I truly want to feel my emotions, live an emotional life and not feel numb any longer. I want to feel human.

Thanks!

Seth

Hi Seth,

The role of you in this dream appears to be the child part of the unconscious mind (id) whose emotions are striving for consciousness or yearning for expression. This could also represent your desire to feel your day to day emotions more fully or express your sexuality in a fulfilling way. Dr. Sarno represents your rational conscious mind (this is an excellent choice by your subconscious to play this role.) You said "this is not the first time you went to see Dr. Sarno, mind you". This statement demonstrates that these emotions have been yearning for expression for awhile but have been thwarted. The fact that his office is in the wood-panelled section of the house just portrays the barrier between the unconscious and conscious minds.

Dr. Sarno's dispensing of the herbs and fiber to the other patient has several meanings. First it shows that your conscious mind still believes your symptoms may have a real structural basis. The fact that he is seeing this patient ahead of you makes the point that you must get over these doubts before you can get to the emotions fully. Otherwise, the defenses will remain in place. The choice of herbs and fiber by your subconscious is also significant as this is a message to you that your doubts are not based on serious disease at all.

The last statement when you were finally talking to Dr. Sarno you said "I had all these emotions that wanted to escape but I didn't know how to handle them". This demonstrates that the ego part of your unconscious mind (the desicion maker of the brain) is still afraid to release these emotions into consciousness. Thus, the reason for the TMS which you feel consciously.

I think the dream shows that you still have some doubts and fears that your symptoms may represent real disease. It tells you that these fears and doubts must be challenged and repudiated before you can feel the emotions fully. The dream also clearly tells you that there is nothing physically wrong with you. Its the emotions that need attention.
