I just got Sarno's new book and there is NO MENTION of restless legs that I can see. I am so disappointed and feel like running to the pharmacy to refill my requip prescription. If there is ANYONE on this site who knows anything about conquering RLS PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I can't even listen to my logical mind telling me that I have been better off the medication. It's amazing how FEAR creeps in and takes over. I was just responding to someone else feeling fear and look at me a few hours later!

I'd also give some thought to the fact that your shrink's comment to you isn't just "disappointing" - it could be absolutely enraging to your inner child. I know I'd be mad as hell if a therapist I trusted said that to me. And that rage will bring on another bout of TMS, as we all know. Instead of focusing on the RLS, think about how badly she's let you down, and how upset that has made you!!

Thank you for that hopeful feedback It makes such a difference to hear one other person say they overcame RLS. I feel very confident today because I have had two nights totally without it and I am feeling some mastery over my brain's tendency to lie to me.

I do know that whatever the symptom, whether it be pain, RLS, anxiety, IBS, etc. etc. etc., that fear is what needs to be banished. When fear is banished I can tell my brain to "cut it out". But fear makes me think illogically.

dwinsor52,

please don't give up hope! I had restless leg syndrome for 10 years and tried just about everything imaginable. It is TMS! It was not only in my leg, but on my entire right side. It would come and go, but when I had it, it bothered me both day and night. It has been gone for almost 2 years. The last time I had it was one of the worst bouts I had ever had. During that time I had to assist at an out-of-town conference for work. At the last minute the person I was to be assisting was unable to attend! I was stuck doing the whole thing myself-but halfway through the conference, I realized that the RLS was gone, and it never came back! I believe it was forcing myself to work through the discomfort/fatigue, while focusing on a necessary task that resolve to this TMS manifestation. It was a very powerful learning experience for me, because it removed all lingering fear that there was something physically wrong. I am now working on applying this to bladder symptoms, which I know are TMS.

Dave is right, just ask me! Thankfully, I have since abandoned this practice, but up until a month or two ago, I continued to doctor shop. And I wondered why I wasn't improving...

Chapter 26: Restless Legs (Dr. Sopher's Book - it is a very short chapter)

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is another unpleasant condition that
seems to be increasing in frequency. It is characterized by an
uncomfortable sensation in the legs that can only be relieved by
moving the legs. Some describe it as a crawling, tingling, aching or
itching sensation. If not a side effect of another medication, RLS
evaluation rarely turns up a cause. Once more, various medications,
including benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants, narcotics and others,
have been tried with unsatisfactory results. If a cause is not
identified, I encourage RLS sufferers to try “thinking psychological.”

I have had patients successfully eliminate their RLS with this
approach.

It almost sounds if your psychiatrist is holding you back also. you may want to look for a psychotherapist. I was seeing a therapist and she told me sometimes you just got to accept the pain. I no longer see her, she was counter productive into what I wanted to accomplish.

I'm afraid if this is your attitude then you haven't quite reached the point where you truly believe in TMS.

Dr. Sarno cannot possibly mention every symptom in his books. Symptoms are widely varied and tailored to the individual. Any symptom with muscle or nerve involvement is a candidate for TMS as well as any auto-immune function.

If you must have confirmation of every symptom you will go through an endless cycle of getting new symptoms and questioning whether or not it is TMS. Then the obsession about this in and of itself becomes a symptom. Just ask Seth

I agree. When I think about it, there is an undercurrent of doubt going on due to something my psychiatrist said to me that indicated that she totally did not "get" TMS the way I thought she had. I had given her Sarno's book a long time ago and thought she understood my thinking when I got off restless leg meds. When I went to see her a few weeks ago, for some reason the first thing she said to me was "I believe fibromyalgia and restless leg syndrome are REAL THINGS - we just haven't found medications to fully help these syndromes yet." I felt crushed. And I realize that this set me back in a way. Because it seems that since she said that I have been feeling like "oh well, I should just stop trying to white-knuckle it and go back on the RLS meds". It is so disappointing when you feel someone is in your corner and then they say a really stupid thing. I am seeing her again on Monday and feel very nervous about how to express myself.

"But the brain is stubborn to hold on to old fears and anxieties."

As has been stated before here - the mind is very crafty - how do you know that the latest bout of RLS isn't due to some recent stress or annoyance rather than something that you have failed to deal with from the past? There might be a completely different cause than previously but your brain latches onto the symptom that distracts you most.

Have you been to psychotherapy?
dwinsor52 Posted - 03/31/2006 : 15:36:34
I just got a very reassuring email from Dr. Sopher, who has been very helpful to me all along in my TMS healing. In his book he has a section on RLS being a TMS equivalent. Trouble is, it's hard to find any support for this outside of a few doctors. I think in the future it will be discussed more frequently as a TMS thing.

Interestingly, my husband, who is a television producer, did a piece on Sarno and TMS for the TV show Chronicle which re-aired a few weeks ago. You would think my having seen 3 TMS doctors, including Sarno himself, and with a husband out there interviewing these guys, that I would be totally TMS free. But the brain is stubborn to hold on to old fears and anxieties.

Well, I believe this book was not meant to focus on all the different diagnosis that we get from docotrs, but it's intention is to focus more and the pysche and treatment. Maybe try to forget about restless leg syndrome or whatever they call it. Do a search on this board and see if anyone has had that go away. Try to e-mail Dr. Sopher and ask him if it is TMS. Don't give up, this is ALL about repressed emotions.
